Marianne de Trey (1913 – 2016). Hugely influential potter awarded the CBE in 2006 (aged 93 yrs) primarily worked at Shinners Bridge pottery, Dartington. The vase is undamaged, without any chips, cracks or repairs. It consists of cobalt, copper red and green glaze decoration. The vase is marked inside the base ring but is not as clear as it should be though a T can be seen. The work is typical of Marianne de Trey and those who collect her work should recognise it.

Marianne de Trey (1913 – 2016). Hugely influential potter awarded the CBE in 2006 (aged 93 yrs) primarily worked at Shinners Bridge pottery, Dartington, Devon. I would estimate from descriptions of the pottery Marianne produced at different times in her life that this pot was produced in the 1950’s. The bowl is undamaged, without any chips, cracks or repairs. The edge of the rim feels rough to the touch but has absolutely no chips or damage. It is very thin which I think accentuates the feel.

PORCELAIN VASE BY MARIANNE DE TREY 1913 – 2016. Measurements: 110 mm high x 160 mm diameter. Inscription: Monogram on the outside of the foot. DeTrey was born in London to Swiss parents. After boarding school, she studied textiles at the Royal College of Arts London where she graduated in1936. On 11 February 1938 she married artist Thomas Samuel Haile. The couple travelled to the US in 1939 due to Haile’s anti-war beliefs, and there de Treygained a passion for pottery. However, in 1943, he was forced to join the USArmy until the end of World War 2. DeTrey and two of her sisters started producing pottery at Dartington, in Devon, and by 1950 she was employing three people, she would go on to run her pottery company, Shinner’s Bridge Pottery for over 30 years. She was a founder member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and Craft Potters Association. When her pottery studio burned down due in 1957 to an electrical fault, de Trey changed her focus from earthenware to stoneware. In 1976, she established a training workshop adjacent to her pottery. She retired from production work in1980, and changed focus to individual work. She was made a CBE for services to the arts in the 2006 New Year Honours. DeTrey died on 18 October 2016 and according to her obituary in the Guardian her work had a significant impact on the craft’s post World War II revival. Signed with her personal’deT’ mark. Decorated with wax-resist pattern inspired by textiles (she trained as a textile designer). Fired in small oil-fired kiln. De Trey founded the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and was active in the activities of the Craftsman potter’s Association, which took her to Greece, China, Thailand, the USA. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and extensively collected. Her modesty, quiet personality and her involvement, initially (during and after the war) in making domestic pottery alongside making her own personal work as part of her concern to make good pottery more widely available (and to earn a living during hard times), probably had adverse effects on her status among the ceramic establishment; placing her below her deserved place in the hierarchy of British studio pottery and its history. This is an outstanding example of British ceramics, of museum quality. The photos do not do justice to the subtle materiality of the work.
