Size: 32.5 cm in diameter. The bowl stands 10 cm high externally. Light crazing as expected. Paul Young draws his inspiration and his techniques from 17th and 18th century English traditional slipware pottery, although he also pays mind to European folk art. This lovely bowl is typical of his work, potted in a red earthenware clay painted with white slip liquid clay and decorated with tube-lined and painted slip, and the fired under a golden coloured glaze. The potter has paid full attention to all the details, such as the neat throwing rings in the well of the bowl, and the decorated outside and base. Paul Young’s impressed mark is on the footrim. Paul trained in the late 1970’s at Sheffield and Chesterfield College of Art close to where his ceramic heroes Ralph Wood, Thomas Whieldon and John Astbury worked. His studio is now near Nuneaton in Warwiskshire. His aim is to fulfil a need, a desire and a passion for making, and his hope is to convey a joy, narrative and intrigue for the viewer. Vase is 10″ H X 6″ W………………………………………. Measurements are approximate and unfortunately occasionally inaccurate… BEAUTIFUL HANDMADE CRYSTALLINE GLAZE POTTERY VASE……………………………….. All of the pieces are hand thrown on a potters wheel by Paul Brown in his studio in Bethel Ohio out of either a high grade of porcelain or a blend of very plastic fine white stoneware mixed with the high grade porcelain. No two are exactly alike as the glazing process creates different crystal patterns on each piece. Each piece is bisque fired before the glaze is applied and high fired to Orton, cone 11, above 2350 F. The glaze firing takes about twenty four hours plus about 12 hours to cool down. The glazes are designed and mixed by Paul with different colorants such as cobalt, copper, manganese, titanium, iron and nickel. The crystals are created by the reaction of zinc and silica in the glaze creating the beautiful effects that are seen. Due to the runny nature of the glaze each piece is glazed on a glaze catcher that has to be thrown and attached to the bottom of the piece to catch the excess glaze. After the firing the catchers removed from the bottom of the piece by heating it with a propane torch. This heating of the glass causes the catcher and the vase to break away from one another. These processes and others add additional time to the creation of the vases. Roughly 100 years ago this process was developed by companies such as Royal Copenhagen, Pierfonds, Sevres, Royal Doulton, and others during the Art Nouveau period roughly One Hundred years ago. Recent advancements in electric computer controlled kilns allowed the ability to go from a success rate of roughly ten percent in the past up to an eighty percent success rate. Nonetheless there are still many losses due to the huge number of variables involved.
