Believe to be An exceptional piece of authentic African studio art pottery from the renowned ELC Art and Craft Centre at Rorke’s Drift, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This substantial hand-coiled terracotta vessel measures exactly 22 cm in height and 18 cm at its widest point, beautifully executed in the traditional Zulu ukhamba (beer pot) form. The elegant tear-drop body has been meticulously hand-burnished to a smooth, warm metallic-brown sheen before firing. The surface showcases gorgeous, natural dark carbon flashes (fire clouds) from the traditional reduction firing process. The flared rim is intricately detailed with a neat band of vertical incised combed lines. The shoulder features a rare, crisp impressed square studio seal bearing a stylized geometric quadrant emblem. Part of an original 1981 estate collection brought directly from Zululand. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The burnished surface has a wonderful original patina. No structural cracks, deep chips, or restorations. A beautiful institutional-quality example of mid-century South African ceramic art history.
