She attended at the Royal College of Art studying for two years under the tutelage of William Staite Murray. Ms Mommens then initially set up a pottery in Kent and then at Chiswick in London. As time passed she spent time at Winchcombe and Wenford Bridge working with Michael Cardew. By the 1950’s she was potting in Sussex eventually by the 1970’s with Chris Lewis. Ms Mommens continued producing pottery throughout her life well into her late 90’s. She passed away in 2010 aged 101 years. The bowl is ash glazed stoneware. It bears the clear impressed mark for Ursula in the centre of the footring. The decoration is a wax resist abstract decoration around the circumference of the bowl and the well on a blue / grey wash (ground). This bowl measures 14 cm in diameter and stands 6 cm high. It is in good condition without any chips, cracks or repairs. There are some small glaze misses just above the base ring where Ms Mommens held the bowl by the foot-ring to dip into the glaze.

This mug measures 7 cm in diameter and stands 8 cm high. It has 5 small chips on its rim, no other damage. It has a clear impressed mark for Ursula Mommens (the UD mark for her maiden name Darwin). URSULA SCHEID Studio Pottery GERMANY Modern GEOMETRIC Abstract Art Cup. British/German Studio pottery by Ursula. (1932- 2008) Considered one of the “London Group”. Red clay cup glazed with triangular shapes in green and blue, showing excellent control and expert eye. Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repairs. Ursula Scheid was born on October, 29, 1932 in Freiburg. She trained in Darmstad, Germany. Married to Karl Scheid, who had been apprenticed to Harry Davis in Cornwall, shared a studio at Dudelsheim, Germany. Ursula Scheid’s work reflects the German design aesthetic. Her pot forms are perfectly made and possess a natural grace and harmony. She works in both stoneware and porcelain decorating with slips and transparent glazes. She is a member of “The London Group”, a group of six German potters who first exhibited at Henry Rothschild’s gallery, Primavera in the late 1960s. Ursula died in 2008.
