Wonderful Moorcroft studio pottery plate, richly decorated in the Clematis pattern. Hand-painted, vibrant, and unmistakably Moorcroft. Dating from the mid-20th century and signed in blue with Walter Moorcroft’s initials. Clematis is a much-loved, elegant and increasingly rare commodity in Moorcroft’s storied catalogue. The floral design flows naturally, with subtle depth in the glaze that only hand-crafted pieces have. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The expected faint vintage crazing is visible on the reverse, yet almost undetectable on the display face of the piece. Perfect for display, a cabinet or a curated collection. Diameter of rim 25.3 cm, external depth 14.8 cm. Condition: Very good condition, no chips cracks or restoration, some scratch mark to bottom inside. It is reduction glazed stoneware, with dribbled ash glazes in side the bowl, a precise crusty black glazed rim, incised decoration on the outside at the rim, and the outside of the bowl a matt green with brown flecks coming through. Walter Keeler (born 1942) is one of the pioneers of the revival of salt glazed stoneware pottery in Britain. He studied and subsequently taught at the Harrow School of Art, and had his first studio in 1965 in Buckinghamshire, moving to near Monmouth, Gwent in 1976. As his write up in Studio Ceramics (Alun Graves, 2003) says, his work shows a crisp precision in design and fluency in making, coupled with a striking and sometimes playful sculptural vision.

Size: Width without handles 17.5 cm, handle to handle 24 cm. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This delightful dish by Walter Keeler dates from about 1990. It has a lovely contrasting finish between the rim and handle and the centre of the dish, and it is marked with Keeler’s usual impressed logo. Walter Keeler (b 1942) is a British studio potter and was professor of Ceramics at the University of the West of England from 1994 to 2002. Keeler makes salt glaze pottery influenced by early Staffordshire Creamware. Keeler was born in London and attended Harrow School of Art, London from 1958 until 1963 where he was trained by Michael Casson. He established his first pottery at Bledlow Bridge, Buckinghamshire in 1965 and in 1976 he moved his studio to Penallt Wales, where he lives with his wife Madoline. Writer Oliver Watson described him as “one of the most important and influential potters of the 1980’s”. Keeler’s work is held in a number of public collections including Victoria & Albert Museum, National Museum Wales, American Craft Museum, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
