Martin Everson Davis Raku Vase – Welsh Artist – Signed MED. This is a highly individual piece in which the Raku firing process has created an expressive, organic surface. The appearance changes dramatically as the vase is turned, with each side revealing a different arrangement of colour, texture and reduction effects. One side is dominated by a vibrant high-gloss cobalt blue glaze, framed by areas of soft grey, white and exposed clay, with darker carbonised markings running through the surface. Turning the vase reveals a much more graphic composition, with black slip splashes and sweeping marks across a pale ground, contrasted by areas of deep smoky black reduction. Another view reveals a predominantly charcoal, grey and raw-clay composition, with an irregular vertical divide and subtle circular carbon markings. The lower section also shows warm copper and bronze tones produced by the reduction process. The result is a three-dimensional abstract work that rewards viewing from different directions, with no single’front’ dominating the piece. The base is initialled MED, providing a direct identifying mark for the artist. Artist: Martin Everson Davis. Type: Raku studio pottery vase. Period: Late 20th century. Signature/Mark: MED initials to base. Decoration: Abstract Raku surface decoration. Colours: Cobalt blue, white, grey, black, charcoal, copper and bronze. Key feature: Dramatically different appearance from each side. Material: Studio pottery Technique: Raku firing Finish: Combination of glossy glaze, raw clay and smoke-reduced surfaces Decoration: Abstract, organic and resist-based surface effects. Height: 24 cm Body diameter: 19.7 cm Top rim diameter: 10.8 cm Base diameter: 8 cm. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and show the actual condition of the item. As with Raku pottery, variations in surface, colour, smoke effects and texture are integral to the individual character of the piece. COLLECTOR / DISPLAY NOTES. A distinctive example of Martin Everson Davis’s Raku work, with a particularly dynamic surface that changes substantially from one side to another. The combination of cobalt blue, black, smoky reduction, exposed clay and metallic copper-bronze tones gives the vase a strong contemporary presence while retaining the unpredictable character associated with Raku firing. Ahead of Its Time: A masterful design that effortlessly bridges mid-century studio craftsmanship with high-end contemporary interior design. 360-Degree Feature Piece: Designed to be rotated, this vessel acts as an evolving sculptural focal point on any modern mantle, shelf, or architectural niche. Collector-Grade Authenticity: Features a crisp, deeply impressed’MED’ makers mark on the base, preserving its lineage from his historic studio. This iconic piece of British studio ceramic history features striking, deeply carved geometric designs on both faces, complete with the classic textured “Rough Ware” finish that makes Troika so highly sought after by collectors worldwide. The History of Troika PotteryTroika Pottery is a legendary name in 20th-century art, famous for challenging traditional smooth pottery with raw, architectural, and highly sculptural forms. The Founders: The pottery was established by an artistic trio (“Troika” being the Russian word for a group of three): Leslie Illsley, Benny Sirota, and Jan Thompson. It was during this famous Newlyn era that the iconic textured “Rough Ware” aesthetic was fully realized, using coarse materials like carborundum to create rustic, cratered surfaces. About This Specific Piece & The ArtistThis particular vase is a prime example from the pinnacle of the Newlyn production years. The Signature / Decorator: The base is clearly marked with the handwritten “Troika” name alongside the distinct, authentic “AB” monogram of Alison Brigden. Alison joined the pottery in 1976 and her immense talent led to her appointment as Head Senior Decorator from 1981 until the studio closed in 1983. Pieces hand-painted by her are highly prized by serious collectors. Side One Design: Features a beautiful abstract, architectural composition. A textured cream rectangular panel frames a deeply incised “Cycladic” geometric disc (resembling an ancient coin or mechanical dial) alongside an offset glazed manganese brown block and a striking vertical accent line. Side Two Design: Features a highly complex 3×3 geometric grid layout. The focal point is a stylized standard tree or column structure with a raised central sphere, surrounded by quadrants contrasting entirely smooth charcoal panels with deeply pitted, rustic oatmeal textures. Condition & DimensionsHeight / Diameter: 11.5 cm (Perfect small-sized wheel vase variant). Condition: Excellent / Pristine. This vase has been meticulously cared for. There are absolutely no chips, cracks, hairlines, or restorations. The colors are vibrant, and the textures remain incredibly crisp. (Investment & Collection)Because Troika Pottery ceased all production over 40 years ago in 1983, these pieces are highly finite. They are no longer made, meaning demand continuously outpaces supply. This specific vase represents a fantastic financial investment that will likely appreciate in value over time. It serves as the ultimate, eye-catching standalone statement piece for a mid-century modern home, or the perfect high-quality anchor to start a lifetime collection of Cornish art pottery. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions or require additional photos.

Signed studio art-glass bowl by celebrated British glass artist Norman Stuart Clarke. This individually hand-blown bowl is formed from thick pale celadon-white opaline glass with a beautiful soft satin-frosted finish. The exterior is decorated with expressive painterly inclusions and flowing abstract forms in pink, cobalt blue, pale blue, orange and black. Fine dark linear trails move through the coloured decoration, giving the bowl the appearance of an abstract painting suspended within the glass. The colours continue around the full circumference, making the piece visually engaging from every angle. The interior has a softly diffused translucent appearance, allowing the external colours to remain visible through the thick glass. The bowl stands upon an applied circular glass foot. The underside retains its hand-finished pontil area and is. Engraved with the artist’s signature. Confirming it as an authentic studio work by Norman Stuart Clarke. Clarke is recognised as an important figure in the British studio-glass movement and is particularly admired for his expressive use of colour, abstract trailing and individually blown sculptural forms. A particularly attractive example of British studio glass that would work beautifully as a decorative centrepiece, collector’s object or sculptural display piece. Decorative bowl / centrepiece. Hand-engraved signature on the underside. Celadon white, pink, cobalt blue, orange and black. No obvious major chips or losses are visible. Small bubbles, variations in thickness, pontil irregularities and differences in the coloured decoration are natural characteristics of individually hand-blown studio glass and should not be considered manufacturing faults. Several fine dark lines visible within the bowl appear to form part of the incorporated abstract decoration. Buyers should nevertheless study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. The raised central area underneath is associated with the handmade pontil and finishing process and is not a later repair. The engraved signature on the underside is faint because of the pale frosted glass but is visible under angled lighting. This is a substantial and fragile handmade glass object.
