A beautiful brown abstract vase from Aldermaston pottery. It features brown and red motifs on a light background of cream and yellow. It’s finished with an iridescent glaze that was hard to capture on camera and really brings the piece to life. There is so much variation and subtlety in the glaze and decoration that each time I look at it I see something new, from reds and prinks through to oranges and deep mahogany colours. Its marked with Edgar Campden’s and Juliet Wilson’s signatures and has an incised TU. It is an excellent example of the high quality of craftmanship and style associated with the Aldermaston pottery that was founded in 1955 by Alan Caiger-Smith. This is a vintage item and so may show signs of its previous life. The vase is in excellent condition, there are no chips, cracks or crazing. Please see photos for details. Geoffrey Eastop Aldermaston Studio Pottery Lidded Chicken Decoration Pot 33cm. Made whilst at Aldermaston pottery this is a significant work and rare survivor given its size and form – being at last 65 years of age. With a wonderful decoration to the lid and base and rather a rare large chicken design to the lid. In fabulous condition with no chips or cracks. Approx 13 inches diamater and 4 inches tall. A significant work by the potter and would make a fabulous centrepiece for a collection of his work.

Celia, an Aldermaston Pottery low tureen and cover, circular twin-handled form, the cover painted with a hen, the circular finial painted inscription Celia, in brown and blue on a tin glaze. Caiger-Smith was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London (1947-49), before reading History at King’s College, Cambridge (1949-52). In 1954 he began his formal training as a potter under Dora Billington at the Central School of Art and Design. The following year he established the Alderstman Pottery in Berkshire with six assistants, including Geoffrey Eastop. At this early point in his career, Caiger-Smith concentrated the Pottery’s efforts on perfecting the use of tin glaze and painted designs using red earthenware clay bodies, before exploring lustre firing on tin-glazes. The output of the Pottery was mostly functional and domestic ware, with a steady stream of individual commissions and one-off pieces. Inspired by British and Near-Eastern ceramic traditions, the work of Caiger-Smith and the Aldermaston Pottery has become world-renowned for tin-glazed earthenware and lustrous surfaces decorated with interlaced patterns of calligraphic brush strokes. His work can now be seen in many public collections worldwide, including a feature at Reading Museum. Caiger-Smith was Chairman of the British Crafts Centre (1974-78) and was awarded an MBE in 1988.
