Vintage John Bedding Studio Pottery Vase – Impressed JB Mark – Turquoise Globe Form – St Ives / Gaolyard Studios Beautiful hand-thrown British studio pottery vase, attributed to John Bedding b. 1947, associated with Gaolyard Studios and the St Ives pottery tradition in Cornwall. This substantial globular / bulbous vase features a rich, vibrant turquoise glaze with a highly textured, bubbly, and crazed surface effect – complete with attractive speckling, iron staining, and organic variations typical of studio reduction firing. The thick, lustrous glaze runs and pools beautifully, giving it a wonderful tactile quality and visual depth. Simple rolled rim and rounded base. Minor expected crazing and surface variations consistent with the firing process and age – adds to its handmade charm. A characterful and collectible piece of post-war British studio pottery. This vintage studio pottery vase is a unique piece from Leach Pottery, handcrafted in Cornwall in the late 20th century. Approximately 8 cm’diameter’ across the rim. The YUNOMI is in good condition BUT there is a chip on the inside of the rim as last three photographs and I have taken that into account when listing the price. It has impressed abstract decoration with hakeme overlay. He has maintained his connection with Leach pottery as one of the founding members of the new Leach charity. He currently produces work from his Gaolers studio, Dove Street, St Ives. There is only his personal mark on this YUNOMI which suggests it was produced c. His work now is very different. Very clear, impressed mark for John Bedding and the Leach pottery St Ives in the base ring as shown in photograph.

John was born in London 1947, he started his career at 17 in south London and then trained and worked with Bernard Leach before moving to Japan expanding his technique. In the 1980s Bedding moved to Cornwall to set up his own studios and started experimenting with low fired fuming and Raku techniques.
