It perfectly embodies the raw, organic aesthetic of the Mid-Century Modern movement, featuring a rugged “volcanic” exterior that offers incredible tactile and visual depth. Design & Aesthetic? The Exterior: Heavily hand-molded with deep grooves and a multi-tonal, earthy glaze. The “molten lava” texture is highly characteristic of the 1970s Brutalist style. Dimensions: H: 41cm (16.1″) Di: 9cm (3.5″). This is a tall cylindrical studio sculpture measuring 41cm in height, hand-built in coarse-gritted stoneware and finished with layered high-temperature glazes. The form is deliberately irregular, with a narrowed base and slightly flaring top, and an unevenly torn rim that reinforces its organic, bark-like presence. The surface is finished in a mottled volcanic glaze, primarily in earthy brown tones with milky white and olive flows that accentuate its craggy, pitted texture. One side features a dramatic vertical trail of applied extruded clay, resembling seaweed or kelp, pulled into twisting folds and ridges before being integrated into the body. This sculptural addition both disrupts and complements the columnar form, encouraging a 360-degree viewing experience. The base is unmarked but unglazed, revealing a heavily grogged clay consistent with British studio stoneware of the 1970s.
