Size 27cm in diameter, 13 cm in height. This bowl is a lovely example of Richard Godfrey’s inimitable work. It is wheel thrown in pale clay, turned, and coloured glazes skilfully applied using an airbrush with further hand painting, and the whole is finished in a tin glaze. The minor clay loss on the base (see photos) occurred during its making when the bowl was removed from the kiln shelf. Part of the manufacturing process, not damage and is not visible at all when the bowl is viewed from the side. Richard Godfrey (1949 – 13 December 2014) made ceramics in his studio at Battisborough Cross, Devon England. He graduated from Bristol School of Art in 1972 having been taught by Gillian Lowndes. From 1973 to 1981 he was Head of Art and Deputy Headmaster at Battisborough International School, Devon, which was founded by Kurt Hahn. Having set up his first workshop, he made production thrown ware for Cranks restaurant. Godfrey was a fellow of the Craft Potters Association and known primarily for his brightly coloured earthenware pottery which used composite underglaze patterns. He won the Bronze award at the European Ceramics Competition in Athens 2004 and at the Art in Clay festival in 2013 he was voted winner of the Valentine Clays Peers Award for best contribution to the festival. He lectured, demonstrated and exhibited widely and was the subject of two television documentaries. Godfrey’s work combined thrown and hand built forms made with white earthenware clay, inspired by observing his surroundings and found objects. Potter Hannah McAndrew described his work as “bright beasts, immaculately made, vibrant and smiling”.

Size 31 cm across the rim, 11 cm external depth. Condition: There is a repaired hairline crack which can just be seen in the images. Otherwise the bowl is in very good condition. Size: 19.5 cm tall, width about 26 cm. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. The vase is slip cast in porcelain clay and painted in oxides in an antiqued faux marble effect, with the interior of the neck finished in fired on gold. The pot will have undergone multiple firings at different temperatures. The potter’s mark on the bottom is part of the casting. The piece shows the mastery of production techniques which Tony had already gained from working in the ceramic industry in Stoke on Trent (including as a designer for Coalport China, part of the Wedgwood group). Also evident is his debt to some of the studio pottery/factory crossover potters such as Clement Massier in France and William Howson Taylor in England. Since this pot was made, Tony has gained an international reputation for his porcelain work using innovative and brightly coloured glazes and liberal use of gold. Born in Sunderland in 1961, Tony is now based in Staffordshire. He studied ceramics at Preston Polytechnic between 1981 and 1984 before working in the pottery industry in Stoke. He now specialises in fine porcelain decorated with precious metal lustres. The pieces are fired as many as six or seven times initially up to 1260 degrees centigrade. Glazes and lustres are then applied at a later stage with lower temperature firings. He is a member of The Craft Potters Association and is frequently featured in the consumer press. Tony Laverick’s pottery and ceramics are regularly exhibited in galleries all around the world and it is held in both private and public collections including The Ashmoleum Museum, The Gmunden Museum in Austria, Maison de la Ceramique in France and the Deutsches Keramikmuseum in Germany.

This is a lovely example of the late 20th century work of Ruth King, the vessel is of square/rectilinear form with three feet Ruth King hand builds her pots from slabs of clay rolled to get the relief decoration. This pot is slat glazed with a striking blue band, the blue only on three sides. Ruth King is a highly collectable potter whose more recent work is found in some of the country’s top galleries. She trained at Camberwell School of Arts and Craft in the mid-1970s and moved to York after a few years of working in London. She is a Fellow of the CPA, has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally and has work in both public and private collections. Most recently she has exhibited at the London Art Fair with the Beardsmore Gallery, Ceramic Art London, the Korean International Ceramics Biennale and Ziyunxixing – The UK-China Ceramic Art Exhibition, Yixing International Festival of Ceramic Art. I make pots fashioned from soft sheets of clay cut and assembled to wrap and clothe a space defined by a single drawn footprint or endpoint. The surface enriched by the passage of salt vapours reacts to each twist and turn of the form adding colour, texture and articulation. Beneath their idiosyncrasy lies a tangible framework, a kernel that they all have in common.

Size: 27 cm across rim, external height 10 cm. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. The bowl has a lovely bell-like ring when tapped. There is a white patch on the underside of the rim where the coloured glaze has not taken, but this is quite common with this particular pattern and not damage. This pattern was developed at Dartington Pottery in 1987 by Janice Tchalenko and Clare Woodhall, who was then head decorator. The bowl is thrown in a porcellaneous stoneware clay and finished with many layers of green, blue and gold glazes. The bowl is not marked or signed, as with quite a bit of Janice Tchalenko’s work. She opened her own studio in 1971, and was chief designer for Dartington Pottery from 1984 to 2010. During her career she took the public along with her on a design and colour journey, working with commercial retailers such as Next and the John Lewis Partnership, and with manufacturers such as Poole Pottery and Royal Staffordshire, but always with the pottery studio, and her own Dartington Pottery, at the heart of her work. She was als o a lecturer at Camberwell School of Art and The Royal College of Art for most of her career, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Art. Her work is included in many public collections both nationally and internationally.

18.5 cm tall with lid, 17 cm to rim without lid, width of body 17 cm. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This beautifully crafted jar and cover is in a mid brown finely grogged clay, thrown and finely turned, finished in a sang-de-boeuf glaze with splashes of an oily glaze, and high-fired to stoneware temperature. It is a lovely example of Peter Sparrey’s work, and bears his impressed stamp. Peter Sparrey was born in Worcestershire and has been potting full-time since leaving school at sixteen. After serving a three year apprenticeship as a production thrower at the Guernsey Pottery, Channel Islands, he set up his first professional studio in 1987. Peter produces finely thrown individual pieces of work using stoneware and porcelain clay bodies, decorated with traditional high-fired Far Eastern glazes including chun, tenmoku, celadon and copper red. From 2004 to 2012 Peter established a new studio in Normandy, France.

Size: 36.5 cm tall. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This tall chimney-shaped vase is a lovely example of Thomas Thunig’s fluid and characterful salt glaze pottery. It is well marked with Thomas’s personal mark as well as that of the pottery. Thomas runs the Topferei Thunig in Saxony, Germany producing a wide range of hand made pottery, but his key work is in salt glazed stoneware, following the tradition of the German potters of the 15th to 18th centuries. This vase is thrown in two pieces in the grey clay typical of German salt glaze ware and decorated with bands of cobalt slip before firing, which have produced different effects on different faces depending on the kiln drafts. Thomas used to come to the UK to sell his wares at ceramic fairs and festivals, but this no longer happens.
