Size: 22.5 cm tall, max width at base 4.3 cm. Condition: Overall good condition, no damage. There is a firing fault on one edge and also a small area where the top decoration has flaked off, both faults arising in the kiln. This very striking vase is a good example or Peter Clough’s work from the last 20 years. The vase is made in a grogged porcelain clay with the decoration built up slowly using, coloured slips, shellac resist, drawing and sponging. The interior has a black vitreous engobe and the whole piece is fired unglazed to 1280 degrees C. Peter titles his work and this one is called “Grey Moor”. There is a firing crack at the top edge of the vase on one side, and on the other side a loss of a small part of the surface decoration, which probably also happened during the firing. Peter Clough trained as a potter and sculptor on the South of England, before moving North in 1966. For the last 20 years he has lived in near Harrogate, and he drives inspiration for his sculpted and painted work from the Yorkshire Dales.

Size: 23 cm tall. Condition: Very good condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This vase is a lovely piece of work after the Chinese style by Bridget Drakeford. The sang-de-boeuf glaze on the rim over the light grey celadon works beautifully and the carved body and subtle shaping of the vase is very effective. On the base, the potter has incised her signature. Bridget Drakeford (born 1946) is a well established potter who has exhibited widely at major venues throughout Britain and Internationally. Her first workshop was established in South West Scotland in 1977, and she moved in 1994 to Herefordshire, where she now has a studio at home. She works exclusively in porcelain, taking her inspiration from Far Eastern ceramics. She was a prizewinner at the Mashiko Ceramics Competition in Japan, and at the World Ceramic Exposition in Korea. She won an Arts Council Award for an exhibition and study tour to Japan in 2005. She is a professional member of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain. Using reduction firings to produce both copper red (‘sang de boeuf’) and celadon glazes, Bridget uses an electric kiln as well at times, researching and making her own glazes based on those traditionally used in China.

Size: 17.5 cm in length, width 15.4. Cm, external depth 5.4 cm. Condition: Excellent condition, no chip, cracks or restoration. A lovely bowl of unusual shape by David White. The company was successful, but had to close in 1967. His next venture was Broadstairs Pottery a few miles along the Kent coast. He worked in porcelain and mainly used blended glazes producing a crackle effect. The pots, when they were taken from the kiln, were rubbed with carbon-based ink which was immediately washed off. This produced a reticulated pattern. David made careful notes at each glaze firing so that different effects could be accurately reproduced.

Size: 17 cm tall, 8.7 cm across rim. Condition: Excellent condition, no chip, cracks or restoration. This vase is typical of the precision Louise Darby applies to her work, while retaining subtle feature of handmaking which gives it a special life and vibrancy. The vase is thrown in a fine clay, carved with three tiny pierced holes and a blue line running down the outside, and biscuit fired before being finished with an immaculately smooth blue glaze on the inside which is matched by the same on the underside of the base. The final firing is in a gas fired kiln to 1280 degrees C. Louise graduated from the Loughborough College of Arts and Design in 1978 and initially worked with Reg Moon at the Torquil Pottery in Henley-in -Arden, Warwickshire, before setting up on her own in 1983. She is a member of the Craft Potters Association and nowadays she tends to sell her work direct from her studio and via the Clay Barn exhibitions which she organises in concert with other artists.

This is an excellent example of John Dunn’s lovely raku work, with a bright orange tinged and irridescent crackle glaze on the interior and a subtle patterning on the underside. The bowl is signed on the underside in gilt by the potter.

Size: 32.5 cm in diameter. The bowl stands 10 cm high externally. Light crazing as expected. Paul Young draws his inspiration and his techniques from 17th and 18th century English traditional slipware pottery, although he also pays mind to European folk art. This lovely bowl is typical of his work, potted in a red earthenware clay painted with white slip liquid clay and decorated with tube-lined and painted slip, and the fired under a golden coloured glaze. The potter has paid full attention to all the details, such as the neat throwing rings in the well of the bowl, and the decorated outside and base. Paul Young’s impressed mark is on the footrim. Paul trained in the late 1970’s at Sheffield and Chesterfield College of Art close to where his ceramic heroes Ralph Wood, Thomas Whieldon and John Astbury worked. His studio is now near Nuneaton in Warwiskshire. His aim is to fulfil a need, a desire and a passion for making, and his hope is to convey a joy, narrative and intrigue for the viewer.
