Size: 34 cm tall, 19.5 across top. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or restoration. This is a lovely example of the complex ceramics of Nicholas Marsh, a slip cast shape with hand applied relief decoration and carving, burnishing and the application of a variety of textures to the external surface. The pit firing creates a variety of effects. Nick an early training in production techniques in the pottery region of Stoke on Trent, combined with academic courses in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Preston Polytechinc. He moved to Bermuda in 1988 as Managing Director of Island Pottery, and then to Canada where he ran his own pottery, returning to the UK in 2002. Nick uses a wide variety of firing techniques, with the aim of exploring surface texture and the reaction of clay to fire and flames. Pit firing is the oldest technique of firing pottery, and is capable of firing to about 1100 degrees but often it will be less.
