Handmade studio pottery vessel from Wenford Bridge Pottery, decorated and finished by Seth Cardew. A beautifully thrown and glazed piece in classic soft green tones with subtle blue banding to the rim. Features strong throwing rings and an elegant, balanced form, suitable for use as a vase, planter, or decorative studio piece. Fully marked to the base with both the Wenford Bridge stamp and SC (Seth Cardew) mark. A highly collectible example of British studio pottery. Maker: Wenford Bridge Pottery. Decorator: Seth Cardew (SC mark). Type: Studio pottery vase / planter. Technique: Hand-thrown, hand-glazed stoneware. Era: Late 20th century approx. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Michael Cardew Vessel made at Leach pottery, St Ives. The vessel has calligraphic detail with the words’THE FUDLING CUP BY BACCHUS’ MIGHT TURNS NIGHT TO DAY & DAY TO NIGHT’. It has a pale yellow, straw coloured glaze. 12.5 cm tall. 10 cm base diameter. The tankard is damaged with a repair to the rim and wearing to the glaze on the handle as shown in the photographs at the end on the listing. Very clear early impressed mark for Michael Cardew. I have only seen this mark detailed in text books and this work is rare, I understand from research that the lozenge MAC mark on this piece was the impressed mark from his ring as he didn’t at that time have a stamp for Leach pots. Clear impressed mark for the St Ives Leach pottery. Cardew first began as a potter training in Braunton, North Devon under William Fishley Holland. He moved to the Leach pottery in 1923 and then set up Winchcombe pottery in 1926 and later Wenford Bridge in 1939. In between he spent a considerable number of years setting up the now famous Dr Ladi Kwali pottery formerly known as the Abuja pottery in West Africa amongst others. Large Studio Pottery Cider Bottle Flagon – Gibson Horrocks? Circa 1960′- 1970’s. Dimensions: approx 12+ inches high. Looks to be a GH mark to the handle? Mary GIBSON-HORROCKS – b1923. On leaving Wimbledon School of Art, Mary was encouraged by her former teacher, Robert Baker, to establish a pottery for the owner at Sudbury in Suffolk. Although this was a wonderful opportunity, she had always wanted to work with Bernard LEACH, but in the early 1940s the Leach Pottery did not encourage students straight from Art School, preferring instead apprentices. Mary was not discouraged; after spending three months at Lake’s Pottery in Truro, she came to spend a day with Bernard and eventually started work at the Leach pottery in 1944. She spent a year living in Pottery Cottage where she met many of Bernard Leach’s friends, including Barbara HEPWORTH and Patrick HERON, before moving to accommodation on the harbour. She was trained by Margaret LEACH to pack the three-chamber climbing kiln, and learned to throw and glaze. In 1947 she left to help start a pottery in Surrey along with Michael CARDEW, but this was not successful, and in 1949 she joined Michael at his pottery in Wenford Bridge in Cornwall.

Michael Cardew (1901-83) for Abuja Pottery in Nigeria – Stoneware cup and cover, grey-green glaze with bands of striated decoration c. 11.5 cm around midriff diameter approx. In good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or renovation. Impressed marks for Michael Cardew and for the Abuja pottery. I see little point in recounting Michael Cardew’s career and how he came to be in Abuja – anyone contemplating purchasing this vase will already be aware of his relationship with Abuja.
