Vtg 1975 Signed Studio Pottery Vase 14 Hand Carved Textured Tribal Southwestern. Vintage hand-signed studio pottery vase, dated 1975. This substantial 14-inch ceramic vessel features deeply carved and incised decorative bands including rope twist, bead, scroll, and fluted motifs. The matte earth-tone clay body gives it a natural, sandy texture with strong architectural presence. The piece is hand signed and dated on the underside (appears to read “Barb 75″ – please see photos for exact signature). Details. Height: approx. 14. Hand carved decoration throughout. Matte, unglazed earth-tone clay. Felt pads applied to base. Signed and dated on underside. Condition: Very good vintage condition. No cracks or repairs observed. Minor age-appropriate wear to underside. A beautiful example of 1970s American studio pottery with strong Southwestern / tribal influence. Displays wonderfully as a statement piece. This is a beautiful hand crafted terracotta vase featuring a beautiful handcarved sgraffito motiff. The word “sgraffito” comes from the Italian word sgraffiare, which means “to scratch”. The technique involves applying a layer of contrasting color to a ceramic surface and then scratching through it to reveal the color of the clay or another layer underneath. The design on this vase is a modern, abstract, and organic pattern with curved lines and textured areas, which is characteristic of the mid-20th century studio pottery movement. The vase is likely a piece of West German pottery from the 1960s. This era saw a boom in ceramics production in West Germany, with many factories creating pieces that were both functional and decorative. This type of design is similar to the work of Franz Schwaderlapp for Sawa Ceramic, which was popular in West Germany in the 1960s. Although there are markings on the base, I can’t say for certain who made it as it’s quite hard to make out, it is likely a one of a kind piece. It is overall in a very good condition, just has some very minor imperfections ie, some flaking of the white. It is approximately 24cm high and 12.5cm in diameter and of a very good weight.

This listing is for a very powerful medium sized vase by David Stewart (1930 – 2019). It has a very strong and simple relief pattern that might be referred to as truncated sweeping arcs. The background has a carved texture pattern. I have seen several vases with a similar motif but with a different background pattern so it is a style he enjoyed using but is not as frequent as his leaf and tree designs. The other pieces with this motif had his full signature. It does have a 5/8 inch chip to the edge of the rim which could and is worthy of being restored. It is 7 3/4 inches high by 5 1/2 inches in diameter. This vase has his early DS cypher, probably from the 1970’s or even the 1960’s. David Stewart was the design assistant to Marguerite Wildenhain at her school of ceramic design, Pond Farm, for about 20 years. His pots show her influence but I believe he surpassed her in the sophistication of his designs as well as the proportions of his forms. Photos 8 through 12 are some other listings of work by Marguerite Wildenhain, David Stewart, F. Carlton Ball and David Leach.
