The History of Troika PotteryTroika Pottery is a legendary name in 20th-century art, famous for challenging traditional smooth pottery with raw, architectural, and highly sculptural forms. The Founders: The pottery was established by an artistic trio (“Troika” being the Russian word for a group of three): Leslie Illsley, Benny Sirota, and Jan Thompson. It was during this famous Newlyn era that the iconic textured “Rough Ware” aesthetic was fully realized, using coarse materials like carborundum to create rustic, cratered surfaces. About This Specific Piece & The ArtistThis particular vase is a prime example from the pinnacle of the Newlyn production years. The Signature / Decorator: The base is clearly marked with the handwritten “Troika” name alongside the distinct, authentic “AB” monogram of Alison Brigden. Alison joined the pottery in 1976 and her immense talent led to her appointment as Head Senior Decorator from 1981 until the studio closed in 1983. Bottle Vase, United Kingdom, 1950s-1970s Studio pottery, hand-made A rare, tall, hand-made vase reflecting the aesthetic of British studio pottery from the mid-20th century. Its impressive size and substantial weight underscore its sculptural presence. Made from dense clay with thick walls, the piece has a commanding, architectural feel. The surface is covered in a matte glaze of deep grey-blue tones, featuring distinctive rusty-brown speckles. These iron-rich spots result from the intentional inclusion of iron particles in the glaze prior to firing, creating an organic, painterly effect that varies in shape and intensity across the surface. The result is a rich visual texture that enhances the form’s natural irregularities. Unsigned, as is typical of many studio works from this period. The piece reflects the influence of Leach Pottery (St Ives), Winchcombe Pottery, and Aldermaston Pottery, among other key British studios of the time. Similar iron-spotting effects were explored by notable 20th-century potters such as Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, Lucie Rie, and Hans Coper, who were known for their experimentation with natural glazes, raw materials, and textural inclusions – often incorporating iron to produce surface variation and expressive depth. The vase embraces the wabi-sabi aesthetic – celebrating imperfection, organic form, and material honesty.
