Presenting a splendid Scandinavian? Tripod-style studio art pottery vase from the Mid Century Era. This vessel has three feet and a slightly triangular mouth opening- classic modern style. The surface of the stoneware vase is incised to create a bark-like texture, and then glazed with a natural medium-tan gloss glaze. The bottom of the piece has a very clear studio chop mark which appears to be a flower Lily or Lotus? I have researched many archives, but have been unable to identify the artist. Many Scandinavian chop marks contain flower symbols, so this is my best educated guess. The vessel is in beautiful condition with no chips, cracks, or damage to the delicate incising. There is some minor wear to the rim of the vase, which may just have been produces as a result of the incising decorative process. Item has been stored in a smoke and virus-free environment. Presenting a three-legged vase by acclaimed Georgia Master Potter Michael Simon. His tripod vessels were featured as part of the traveling exhibition “Built, Thrown and Touched: Contemporary Clay Works, ” a Mid-America Arts Alliance Tour from October 1991-October 1995. Examples of this style of vessel can also be seen in the. Monograph Michael Simon: Evolution. This piece features Simon’s classic salt glaze firing technique with a tan hued ground, and black graphic stripe pattern. Each of the three feet come to a point, which supports the vessel’s triangular form. The vase has a matte finish, and clearly displays Simon’s’MS’ chop mark, located towards the bottom edge of the piece. The vessel is in excellent condition with only one almost pin-like chip on one of the foot’s edge. There are no other chips, cracks, or flaws whatsoever. 1947 is a functional ceramic artist who lives in Athens, Georgia. His works are usually fired in salt kilns with motifs of nature and animals. Simon was a student of Warren MacKenzie, who was, in turn, a student of Bernard Leach. Though their influence is felt, Simon’s work is unique; every pot emerges with an integrity and attitude all its own. He received his B. From the University of Minnesota and M. From the University of Georgia. In 2011, Michael Simon had a major exhibition at The Northern Clay Center entitled Michael Simon: A Life in Pots featuring 30 years of his pottery. In 2013, he exhibited at the Georgia Museum of Art and showcased his best pots from the past several decades. The exhibition was called Pick of the Kiln: The Work of Michael Simon. His work can be found in the Los Angeles County Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and is in The Rodger Corsaw Collection of Ceramic Art at Alfred University. 4 3/4 Diameter Base.
