A beautiful and characterful signed ceramic poodle by Dorothy Clough, one of those pieces that manages to be both decorative and quietly expressive. Modelled in a poised seated stance, the poodle lifts her head with gentle confidence, adorned with a pearl-style collar and medallion. The glaze is a soft powder blue, scattered with delicate floral dotting, giving the piece lightness and charm without fuss. The sculpting is refined, particularly in the curled ears and tail, and the proportions are spot on. The base is clearly signed Dorothy Clough, confirming authorship. A vent hole to the base is present, consistent with studio ceramic practice. This is a decorative studio piece rather than a mass-produced ornament, and it shows in the individuality of the modelling and glaze. Height approximately 15 cm. Condition is very good vintage, with only light age-related surface wear. No cracks or restoration observed. A genuinely delightful example of mid-century British ceramic animal sculpture. Elegant, knowing, and full of personality. The poet in me would say. She does not beg for attention. Size: 22.5 cm tall, max width at base 4.3 cm. Condition: Overall good condition, no damage. There is a firing fault on one edge and also a small area where the top decoration has flaked off, both faults arising in the kiln. This very striking vase is a good example or Peter Clough’s work from the last 20 years. The vase is made in a grogged porcelain clay with the decoration built up slowly using, coloured slips, shellac resist, drawing and sponging. The interior has a black vitreous engobe and the whole piece is fired unglazed to 1280 degrees C. Peter titles his work and this one is called “Grey Moor”. There is a firing crack at the top edge of the vase on one side, and on the other side a loss of a small part of the surface decoration, which probably also happened during the firing. Peter Clough trained as a potter and sculptor on the South of England, before moving North in 1966. For the last 20 years he has lived in near Harrogate, and he drives inspiration for his sculpted and painted work from the Yorkshire Dales.
