DENISE / HENRY WREN OXSHOTT COLLECTION HEAVY STUDIO POTTERY VASE 20TH CENTURY. Materials: Pottery / Stoneware. Dimensions: 165mm tall x 192mm wide. Makers marks: Incised’Oxshott’ & indistinct initisls. Condition: Some minor nicks and chips to the body of the vase, and some firing cracks to the pooled glaze interior. Wear commensurate with age and use. Notes: This vase was part of the Denise & Rosemary Wren Oxshott collection. Very heavy quality, and possibly an early piece. Set of 5 Miniature Studio Pottery Vases – Wren Pottery (Oxshott). Attributed to Denise Wren – Blue Glaze – Signed to Base. A delightful group of five miniature studio pottery vases attributed to. Each piece is individually hand-thrown with incised decoration and glazed in a rich cobalt blue. All are signed to the base with “DW” and “Oxshott” marks. The vases vary in size between approx. 10cm to 11.5cm in height and show fine surface detail, textured finish. These miniature forms were not mass produced and are relatively scarce-sets of five in consistent condition and glaze are particularly rare. The Oxshott Pottery was established in 1920 by Denise and Henry Wren and became a highly regarded family studio across several generations. Denise Wren was one of the first female studio potters in Britain, and her work-especially these small sculptural pieces-has gained renewed attention from collectors of mid-century and early British studio pottery. Maker: Attributed to Denise Wren. Studio: Wren Pottery, Oxshott. Dimensions: Heights range from approx. 10cm to 11.5cm. Decoration: Hand-thrown with textured surfaces and deep blue glaze. Collectible Denise Wren (Oxshott Pottery) 16cm Cream & Blue Glazed Vase c1920. A rare and highly collectible studio pottery vase by Denise Wren, a pioneering (and one of the very first) female British studio potters. Wren popularised pottery as a craft by giving classes and writing books together with her husband Henry and daughter Rosemary. Denise and Henry were especially interested in hand-built methods, in contrast to most potters of the time who preferred to make wheel thrown pots only. They taught methods like making coil pots and slab pots. During interviews, the press usually assumed that Henry Wren was the potter while Denise Wren was his assistant. In fact, she made the vast majority of the ceramics while Henry organised the displays. Works by Denise Wren feature in a number of museum collections including the Victoria & Albert museum in London. This particular vase dates to c1920 and features a geometric pattern of a horizontal band of blue dots with vertical blue lines on a cream ground. The vase is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Due to the nature of the decoration there are multiple bubbles in the overglaze all over the body – giving an almost’lunar landscape’ effect. To the rim there are three rougher areas where there is no overglaze. Please see pictures for more information. A really super piece! 16cm tall, 10.5cm rim. Vintage Oxshott studio pottery slipware dish, Henry & Denise Wren, c1925

Size: 23.5 cm in diameter, external depth 3 cm. Condition: Several small chips to the rim, not affecting the display qualities much. Otherwise in very good condition, no cracks, nice “ring”. The rare and delightful piece was made by Henry and Denise Wren at Oxshott Pottery, in Surrey. The shallow dish is hand thrown in a heavily grogged earthenware clay and painted inside with a lighter clay slip. The fish design is tube lined in the old English tradition and also there are sgraffito details scratched back to the clay body. The whole dish is finished in a lovey honey coloured glaze. The fish design is very much in the style of Chinese rural pottery. Oxshott is incised on the base. There is also a stencilled Museum number on the base. The style of the signature, materials used and general feel of the piece strongly suggests a pre WW2 date, probably 1920s. In her early days, Wren was more a designer by inclination than a potter and her work was a bit clumsy, albeit vibrant, like this dish. Oxshott Pottery links the modern British Studio Pottery movement to the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. Denise Wren came to England from Australia in 1900 and trained at the Kingston School of Art from 1907 to 1911 under the great Arts and Crafts designer Archibald Knox. She set up Oxshott pottery with her husband Henry in 1920 and continued to make there until 1978. Provenance: The Derbyshire Museums Service, which from 1936 to about 1980 built a collection of art and other items for mobile use in schools and colleges throughout Derbyshire.
