Beautiful vintage studio pottery vase with a striking rectangular form and hand-decorated abstract design. Featuring earthy beige, cream, brown and green tones with an organic textured finish, this is a highly decorative piece that works equally well as a sculptural object or vase. The unusual architectural shape and artistic glaze effects give it a strong mid-century modern and contemporary studio pottery feel. The rear displays a contrasting abstract pattern, while the impressed maker’s mark to the base suggests studio production. Condition is good vintage condition overall. There is a small chip to the rim at the top opening, visible in the photographs, together with a few minor age-related marks and signs of wear consistent with age and use. Back Impressed: “CARTER STABLER ADAMS POOLE ENGLAND” Hand Inscribed “ZW” Artist’s Monogram Most Likely For Ruth Pavely c1922 Onwards. Poole Pottery was founded in 1873 in Poole Quayside in Dorset. The business continued to produce unique and ground breaking pottery including amongst others the “Delphis” range which was launched 1963. The Poole factory moved away from the quay in 1999 – significantly with Master Potter Alan White throwing the final pot at the Quayside March 2001, ending 128 years of pottery production there. Production continued at the new site in Sopers Lane Poole until its’ closure in 2006. Many gifted artists and ceramic designers have been associated with Poole Pottery over its’ 128 years including Alan White who joined in 1973 and Anita Harris who for over 10 years from the 1990s was a Senior Designer and Decorator. In 2011, Poole Pottery was taken over once again, by Denby Pottery and currently a shop and studio have been kept as popular attractions on the Poole Quayside where Master Potter Alan White can still be seen demonstrating. Several designers and ceramic artists at the site help design new collections available direct from the Studio website.

This is a beautifully hand-crafted Japanese studio pottery vase featuring a carved ume (plum blossom) motif flowing around the shoulder of the vessel. This is a beautiful hand crafted terracotta vase featuring a beautiful handcarved sgraffito motiff. The word “sgraffito” comes from the Italian word sgraffiare, which means “to scratch”. The technique involves applying a layer of contrasting color to a ceramic surface and then scratching through it to reveal the color of the clay or another layer underneath. The design on this vase is a modern, abstract, and organic pattern with curved lines and textured areas, which is characteristic of the mid-20th century studio pottery movement. The vase is likely a piece of West German pottery from the 1960s. This era saw a boom in ceramics production in West Germany, with many factories creating pieces that were both functional and decorative. This type of design is similar to the work of Franz Schwaderlapp for Sawa Ceramic, which was popular in West Germany in the 1960s. Although there are markings on the base, I can’t say for certain who made it as it’s quite hard to make out, it is likely a one of a kind piece. It is overall in a very good condition, just has some very minor imperfections ie, some flaking of the white. It is approximately 24cm high and 12.5cm in diameter and of a very good weight.
