Size: 23 cm tall. Condition: Very good condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This vase is a lovely piece of work after the Chinese style by Bridget Drakeford. The sang-de-boeuf glaze on the rim over the light grey celadon works beautifully and the carved body and subtle shaping of the vase is very effective. On the base, the potter has incised her signature. Bridget Drakeford (born 1946) is a well established potter who has exhibited widely at major venues throughout Britain and Internationally. Her first workshop was established in South West Scotland in 1977, and she moved in 1994 to Herefordshire, where she now has a studio at home. She works exclusively in porcelain, taking her inspiration from Far Eastern ceramics. She was a prizewinner at the Mashiko Ceramics Competition in Japan, and at the World Ceramic Exposition in Korea. She won an Arts Council Award for an exhibition and study tour to Japan in 2005. She is a professional member of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain. Using reduction firings to produce both copper red (‘sang de boeuf’) and celadon glazes, Bridget uses an electric kiln as well at times, researching and making her own glazes based on those traditionally used in China.

This fine tall gas-fired Bridget Drakeford porcelain vase measures 32cm high (12.5 inches) and 14 cm (5.5 inches) at its widest point. Its enveloped in a celadon glaze which gives a slightly greenish tone and is finished with pours of deep copper red glaze, known as sang de boeuf (ox blood) or a. The vase bears her impressed mark to the base, which according to the reference book – British Potters’ Studio Marks – is for years following 2005. Her name is also impressed to the base. These influences have come together in assured forms and technical concepts, to which she adds refined and individual touches. Her work ranges from wide, open bowls to teapots & caddies with some pieces having innovative decorative detailing in precious metals, hand worked by the artist. All of her pieces are graced with a subtlety of finish and sophistication of glaze colour that makes them very collectable & much sought after.
