Richard Batterham for Durweston Pottery celadon glazed bowl. The bowl is 11 cms in diameter and 7 cms high. The bowl is free from chips, cracks and repairs and is in good condition. This bowl has a marking H9 incised into it’s base and was kept by Richard Batterham in his studio as a reference for future work. Please see the report below from the ceramics expert Michael Jeffrey and Rueben Batterham (Richard’s son who is a well respected potter in France). Reuben’s explanation of his fathers marks, found on the bases of some of his work. Incised numbers are related to the slip, these are mostly salt glaze, 28,27 and 30 are the most used. Then you have the clay bodies which are a letter and a number for clay tests or just a letter (sometimes stamped) for recognition when glazing. I can’t confirm all incised marks are clay tests. Some will be slips (numbers) and some clay bodies (letters) to be recognised when glazing and packing. H9 is most likely test number 9 for H body clay. To add to the provenance there was also a small tenmoku glazed ovoid vase (pictured) which was damaged by Richard but kept. It has Richard’s mark impressed on it which makes it both early and rare. The ovoid vase is not included in the sale. The cost will vary from country to country from courier to courier and will depend upon weight and size of the parcel when packed. Richard Batterham mug for Durweston pottery incised’Bill’. The mug has no chips, cracks or repairs and is in perfect condition. The sale included many examples recovered from Richard’s studios following his passing in 2021. This mug has clearly been on a shelf gathering dust. The shape and design of the mug is definitively Richard Batterham. The ovoid vase is not included in the sale.
