Tim Hurn Studio Pottery Vase – Large Example. A large example of a studio pottery by Tim Hurn (born 1964 Birmingham). As you can see this is saltglazed vase having three impressed’shells’ on the main body. Tim has impressed his monogram in two places on the piece, both are clear. Not sure when this dates from, Tim studied at Camberwell School of Art & Crafts in 1984. From his website I can convey that after college he went to Japan, taking participating in the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname, Japan. He travelled, worked and exhibited in Japan for six months gaining experience in wood firing kilns and absorbing the rich Mingei or folk traditions of Japanese art and craft. Upon return to the UK, Tim secured a position as apprentice to John Leach, Bernard’s eldest grandson, at Mulchelney Pottery on the Somerset levels in 1988. This enabled Tim to build and use the’Anagama’ kiln when he moved to Bettiscombe in Dorset. Tim has continued to use this for the last 20 years. Measurements: sits just under 11.75inches high, 4inches wide at base and just under 3inches wide at the top. Condition: good overall condition, no damage or restoration – please see all photos provided as these form part of the condition report. A very fine example – a hand thrown and surface worked handled jug – bulbous body form – Waistel Cooper – signed to the base – original condition – approximately 5.5 in height – no damages. I package all items with care – see feedback. Waistel Cooper was born in Ayr, inheriting his unusual first name from his father, a bookseller and stationer. He studied drawing and painting and showed striking ability in portraiture, but this was not to be his chosen way of working. In 1946 he travelled to Reykjavik where he took to ceramics. On his return to the UK he settled in Somerset and then moved to Cornwall to be at the centre of the artist’s community at that time. He set up his studio and became an outstanding potter influenced by the world renowned ceramicists, Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.

William Staite Murray Large 20cms Studio Pottery Ash Glazed Vase RARE EXAMPLE. A rare piece indeed. A good sized, original William Staite Murray vase from circa 1936. Stoneware, running cream and green ash glazes with heavy iron splashes, the body with throwing rings and feldspar inclusions to the surface, expressive brushwork. Clear, impressed M seal to base. William Staite Murray was the most import British potter of the first half of the twentieth century. He was born in south-east London in 1881, and developed an interest in painting as a teenager. In his late twenties he attended pottery classes at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and then went on to work at Yeoman Pottery in Kensington. Here he worked with the influential Cuthbert Fraser Hamilton who was member of the Fitzroy Street Group, a founding member of the London Group and had worked at the Omega pottery with Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. The Yeoman Pottery ran from 1915 to 1919. After the great war he set up his own pottery in Rotherhithe, south-east London, at his brother’s factory premises. In the twenties he developed a relationship with Shoji Hamada, who visited his London pottery. His reputation grew throughout the early 1920s and in 1925 he was appointed to the staff of the Royal College of Art. The following year he became head of its Pottery Department. He patented his kiln design; a gas fired kiln that afforded good control and enabled him to produce glazes of consistently high quality. In 1929 he moved his workshop to Berkshire. Ten years later while travelling in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) he found himself cut off by the second world war. Attempts to return to England were in vain, so he settled there and stopped potting. In 1955 he became Trustee of the National Arts Council of Southern Rhodesia. There was a very successful exhibition of his works in 1957, but by this time he was suffering from cancer which claimed his life in 1962. His students included Sam Haile, Constance Dunn and Henry Hammond.

An excellent medium sized torn oval by Alan Wallwork. Height: 7.5 inches. This piece is an excellent example of Wallwork’s pottery. Wallwork would tear pots apart to give an irregular and organic opening. The effect of this pot is dramatic with the brown glaze on the outer edges and the white central section pierced and accented with blue (the interior entirely blue). Marked with Wallwork’s “AW” mark on the bottom, with the original label with exhibition number attached.. Made during his period in France. On offer is a very rare early example of Rose Cabat’s Feelie Pottery. The piece is among the largest she made, at 5 1/2″ in height and 5″ across. The opening at the top is comparatively large for a Feelie. The glaze is mossy green with turquoise sneaking through at the top and base. The underside is marked with an early signature, an R inside a C. There are several other inscribed marks, likely codes for her glaze and/or form. The vessel is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other problems to note. A very rare and fine early example from one of America’s greatest ceramic artists.
