H: 20 cm W 20 cm. 1970’s, signed with RF seal to base. Stoneware with dry glaze and incised marks. Robert Fournier was born in Wimbledon and excelled at art at school though did not pursue it as a career. He established the Ducketts Wood Pottery in Hertfordshire in 1947. A year later he set up the pottery department at Goldsmiths College. He worked together with his wife Sheila Fournier (ne Cook) whom he married in 1961, they moved to Greenwich in 1965 and in 1971 they settled in the village of Lacock in Wiltshire, leasing the old workhouse from the National Trust. Here Robert consolidated his ceramics, producing what became his signature pieces, a range of “pebble” pots that were based on natural forms. With an understanding of the organic structures of stones, rocks and plants, he turned these ideas into clay through the use of simple, hand-built shapes, or tall flattened bottles. These were decorated with areas of unglazed clay, textured white glaze and dotted with small patches of rich, saturated colour. The pots were shown successfully at galleries in Britain, as well as in Germany and France. I always pack with care and post promptly.

Not sure of the other mark? Robert and Sheila Fournier. They have variously worked in thrown and hand-built earthenware, stoneware and porcelain, making tableware and decorative items. Sheila’s work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Robert is well known as the co-writer of the essential book British Studio Potters’ Marks. Robert Fournier was Head of Ceramics at Goldsmiths. Robert married Sheila, she learned to pot from Robert before they together set up a studio in Greenwich where they produced table ware as well as individual pieces in stoneware and porcelain. They moved their pottery to Kent in 1965 and in 1971 established the Lacock Pottery in Wiltshire where their reputations grew and Robert, as well as becoming renowned for his pebble pots based on natural forms, wrote a number of definitive books on ceramics. Sheila Fournier developed a style of porcelain ware with graceful shapes and subtle decoration; she also made stoneware pieces with layered petal-like forms, as exemplified in the item in the Warwick collection. Together the Fourniers set up the archive of the Craft Potters Association, of which they were founder members. They both retired from potting in 1987. Height 3 1/2 9. A superbly glazed rock/pebble sculpture vase from Robert Fournier at Castle Hill, circa 1965-71. Measuring 9cm high x 11.8cm at widest and in excellent undamaged condition. Bearing the castle hill and Robert’s personal impressed stamps to the lower body. A very nice example for the collector.
