The History of Troika PotteryTroika Pottery is a legendary name in 20th-century art, famous for challenging traditional smooth pottery with raw, architectural, and highly sculptural forms. The Founders: The pottery was established by an artistic trio (“Troika” being the Russian word for a group of three): Leslie Illsley, Benny Sirota, and Jan Thompson. It was during this famous Newlyn era that the iconic textured “Rough Ware” aesthetic was fully realized, using coarse materials like carborundum to create rustic, cratered surfaces. About This Specific Piece & The ArtistThis particular vase is a prime example from the pinnacle of the Newlyn production years. The Signature / Decorator: The base is clearly marked with the handwritten “Troika” name alongside the distinct, authentic “AB” monogram of Alison Brigden. Alison joined the pottery in 1976 and her immense talent led to her appointment as Head Senior Decorator from 1981 until the studio closed in 1983. Pieces hand-painted by her are highly prized by serious collectors. Side One Design: Features a beautiful abstract, architectural composition. A textured cream rectangular panel frames a deeply incised “Cycladic” geometric disc (resembling an ancient coin or mechanical dial) alongside an offset glazed manganese brown block and a striking vertical accent line. Size: 22.5 cm tall, max width at base 4.3 cm. Condition: Overall good condition, no damage. There is a firing fault on one edge and also a small area where the top decoration has flaked off, both faults arising in the kiln. This very striking vase is a good example or Peter Clough’s work from the last 20 years. The vase is made in a grogged porcelain clay with the decoration built up slowly using, coloured slips, shellac resist, drawing and sponging. The interior has a black vitreous engobe and the whole piece is fired unglazed to 1280 degrees C. Peter titles his work and this one is called “Grey Moor”. There is a firing crack at the top edge of the vase on one side, and on the other side a loss of a small part of the surface decoration, which probably also happened during the firing. Peter Clough trained as a potter and sculptor on the South of England, before moving North in 1966. For the last 20 years he has lived in near Harrogate, and he drives inspiration for his sculpted and painted work from the Yorkshire Dales.

Scarce 1940 Fulham Pottery London Amphora Double Handled Eggshell Blue Grey Vase. This stunning earthenware vase is a beautiful example of Fulham Pottery London’s, late art deco pieces. With its sharp-angled double handled design, amphora shape and gorgeous blue/grey eggshell glazed finish, it is a stunning and rare piece by a now highly sought after pottery house. 20.5cm tall, 10.5cm in length (from widest point which is handle to handle when facing front), 9.5cm in width (when facing the side measured at widest point) Base is just under 6.5cm wide and the opening has a diameter of 6cm.
