THE SURFACE IS INCISED WITH CIRCLES AND IS COVERED IN A MYRIAD OF BUMPS AND BLISTERS WHICH ARE TYPICAL OF NIC’S WOODFIRING TECHNIQUES AND PART OF THE BEAUTY OF HIS WORK – PLEASE CHECK ALL PHOTOS. THERE IS ONE CHIP JUST UNDERNEATH THE TOP RIM – SEE PHOTOS – AND THERE IS A SMALL 1CM SURFACE FLAKE OFF THE INTERNAL TOP RIM – SEE PHOTO 5 AT APPROX 3 O’CLOCK. THE VASE IS CLEARLY SIGNED “NIC COLLINS” ON THE BASE. THE VASE MEASURES APPROX 9 INCHES OR 23CMS MAX IN HEIGHT. Size: Width without handles 17.5 cm, handle to handle 24 cm. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This delightful dish by Walter Keeler dates from about 1990. It has a lovely contrasting finish between the rim and handle and the centre of the dish, and it is marked with Keeler’s usual impressed logo. Walter Keeler (b 1942) is a British studio potter and was professor of Ceramics at the University of the West of England from 1994 to 2002. Keeler makes salt glaze pottery influenced by early Staffordshire Creamware. Keeler was born in London and attended Harrow School of Art, London from 1958 until 1963 where he was trained by Michael Casson. He established his first pottery at Bledlow Bridge, Buckinghamshire in 1965 and in 1976 he moved his studio to Penallt Wales, where he lives with his wife Madoline. Writer Oliver Watson described him as “one of the most important and influential potters of the 1980’s”. Keeler’s work is held in a number of public collections including Victoria & Albert Museum, National Museum Wales, American Craft Museum, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

Gorgeous pair of large studio pottery vases with 4 handles! There is a chip with a 2.00 inch crack coming down at the rim of one vase. It appears to either be an artist imperfection or something that was repaired by a potter / professional. The other vase has a small chip in the rim with no crack. No other chips or cracks. It appears to say “Balch” or “Balz” on the bottom – we cannot make it out. If you have any information that will improve our ad, please do share as we love to learn!
