Melina Xenaki Wheel-Thrown Tapered Cylinder Vase. Lino-cut decoration on matte white ground. Cycladic / bronze-age style horse & abstract motifs. Signed MX to base. One of a short exhibition run produced for. Tent London Design Fair, 2016. A leading platform for emerging and established designer-makers. Not a general production piece. A confident, tall cylinder vase in off-white stoneware with a deliberately raw, matte surface. Printed in a high-impact dense black and decorated with stylised Cycladic horse and sun motifs. The reverse carries a striped chevron pattern. Design characteristic of Xenaki’s archaeological sensibility, drawing directly from Bronze Age visual language and her Greek heritage. Melina Xenaki trained at UCA Farnham (BA, first class honours) and the Royal College of Art (MA). Now working from her native Greece, Xenaki is a well-regarded, exhibited artist whose career is in full flight. She is commissioned in high-end architectural collaborations and has designed ranges for the shops of the British Museum and Benaki Museum. Please note this is a functional wheel-thrown studio piece – not a hand-built sculptural gallery edition – and is priced accordingly. Approx dimensions: 26.2cm H, 8.3cm W (base), 7.5cm W (top rim). This will be carefully packed and posted promptly with full tracking. I endeavour to accurately describe and photograph any flaws I detect in the interests of transparency. A hand-thrown studio pottery bottle vase signed by the maker and dated 1996. The vase features a rounded bulbous body with a tall slender neck and is finished in a beautifully varied reduction-fired glaze. This is a beautifully handcrafted woodland vase, sculpted in textured stoneware and wrapped in an intricate relief of winding tree trunks and branches. The exterior is sculpted in high-relief, featuring intertwined tree trunks, textured bark, and organic contours that mimic the twisted forms found in old-growth woodland. This isn’t merely a decorative pattern-it’s a style rooted in British nature craft traditions, where makers often draw directly from the forests and fells around them. The irregular rim and hand-shaped silhouette indicate small-batch studio production rather than factory work, giving the vase a one-of-a-kind presence. Inside, a deep, glossy glaze creates a beautiful contrast to the earthy, matte exterior. The dark interior finishing is typical of studio pottery meant to be both decorative and functional-perfect for dried flowers, branches, or simply displayed as an art piece. The label on the base suggests a connection to the Howgill Fells area in Cumbria, a place known for its tight-knit community of artisans, ceramicists, and countryside-inspired makers.
