Helen Rondell – A superb Studio Pottery sculptural raku vase. Helen established her studio in 2001 after studying at North Staffordshire University, gaining a BA (Hons) in Ceramics. In 2014 she was accepted as a member of the Craft Potters Association and in the same year began teaching ceramics part-time at The Ceramic Studio, Kent. Her sculptured vases are Raku fired using resist slips. After the bisque firing, the resist slip is painted onto the form and when dry, a crackle glaze is brushed onto a selected area. It is then fired in the Raku kiln. Good condition at a glance there looks to be blemish on the rim but its smoothed over – see photos so not damage just a beautiful imperfection in the manufacturing – see last two photos.

Studio Pottery Vase by Helen Pincombe Leaves Blue Green. Born in India and educated in Australia she came to Britain in 1925 and trained under William Staite Murray at the Royal College of Art, deputizing for him when the college moved to Ambleside during World War II. A teacher and keen exponent of hand building, Pincombe ran her own pottery for over 30 years eventually retiring in the 1970s. Her hand-building techniques included coiling, slab building and moulding inspired by world pottery and in turn influential on many later potters. For some years she had a workshop near Denise Wren at Oxshott, Surrey where she fired in an updraught gas kiln. Later she lived near Cambridge where she ran classes and collected an extensive slide collection of world ceramics which she used in her teaching. A rare piece that has rich beautiful details of leaves in multiple colors. No chips or cracks imprinted with HP by foot/ bottom of vase. Measures: 3 1/2″ tall, at bottom 2 3/8″ round, middle of vase 2 1/2″ round, and top opening is 1 3/8″ round. Colors include: blue dark and light green. Flattened form slab built Studio Art pottery jug/vase decorated with a blue and dark grey paper resist abstract design and a gold leaf rim. Painted signature to base. By Cambridge UK based. 19 cm high x 20 cm wide x 6 cm deep (at widest point). Helen describes her work as’serious, posh and frivolous’. For many years she was a functional potter, making batches of domestic pots on a wheel. Helen’s work changed about ten years ago when it seemed to her that it was about the right time to have some non-functional fun. She started to use a hand building technique, with soft and flexible sheets of high firing clay. These are freely cut, curved and sometimes twisted. The surfaces are painted with slips, underglaze pigments using brushes and paper and wax resists. Sometimes she will add silver, gold or copper leaf and lustre. Helen is currently exploring combinations of ceramic form; colour and text with words integrated into the decoration and often distorted beyond immediate recognition. This presents exciting opportunities for her to investigate surfaces. She also make more frivolous pots as a series. These include flattened harlequin bowls, teapots, bird jugs and flat cups and saucers. She is based in Cambridge, UK.
