A five lobed vase by Terry Bell Hughes decorated in sang de boeuf glaze over a grey ground showing the Chinese influence of this potter. This piece is probably an early work from the 1970’s. 130mm tall x 150mm wide. TH in a shield impressed mark. Bell Hughes is described as one of Wales most celebrated potters, a graduate of Harrow School of Art, he set up a pottery with his wife in Llandudno Junction. His work is held in many National and International Collections. No damage, normal signs of wear.

Inspired by sand, sea and rugged landscapes, Beverley has made the study of nature her life’s work as she seeks to interpret and replicate organic forms in clay. She is partially sighted so the touch and feel of clay both fired and unfired is very important. This lovely rarely available bowl is very tactile, made of rugged clay in variations of grey and blue. 20cms x 11cms (high).

Edward Hughes studio pottery stoneware large fluted bowl, tenmoku glaze

A fine and large studio pottery fluted bowl by leading post-war British potter Edward Hughes. Rich, glossy black tenmoku glaze that breaks to a bright red. Potter’s mark to the foot. Exhibition or collection number sticker to the underside. Excellent condition, as new, rings like a bell. Dimensions (approximate): 27cm x 27cm x 11cm. A lovely quality thing. Edward Hughes was one of Britain’s finest post-war potters working in the “Anglo-Oriental” style. Although clearly inspired by the Leach school and by Japanese work, his pots are immediately recognisable and distinctive and almost always of superior quality in the making. A very fine and large studio pottery plate or shallow dish by leading British potter Edward Hughes. Ash glazes and slipped decoration. Potter’s mark to the underside. Excellent condition, as new. Dimensions (approximate): 27cm x 27cm x 3cm. Perfectly functional but also large enough for pure display. Relatively uncommon given that much of Hughes’ work was destined for the established Japanese market (Hughes spent much of his career in Japan before returning to the UK). Needless to say (hopefully), the pot easel used to aid the photography of the pot is not included in any sale.
