Large copper glaze-trailed Japanese press-molded henko bottle vase handmade in Tamba, Japan, by Bernard Leach apprentice, Ichino Shigeyoshi. In good used condition. Excerpted from Cornwall Artists Index. Shige’ (nickname in Cornwall). Ichino was born in Tachikui, Japan and studied at Kansai University. Janet LEACH had stayed with his family and worked with him when she studied in Japan from 1954 to 1955. This was of great benefit, due to his status as a fully trained traditional Japanese potter. While in Europe he also directed the construction of a kiln for the Atelier de Cep in Villenauxe, France. Works incl: Monument, Sasayamaguchi National Railway Station, Japan. 1981: Amalgam Art Gallery, London. 1990: Hyogo artists craftsmen exhibition, Winner of the Kobe Newspaper Award. Here is a wonderful studio pottery vase or brush pot by known Japanese potter, Toyoharu Ichino. This vase measures 6″ tall x 4 1/2″ at its widest. It has a thick tenmoku rust brown spontaneous grasses motif on one side. It is in excellent, original condition with no chips, cracks, or glaze scratching. It is clearly incised “Ichino” on the bottom and has its original exhibition sticker. This piece was out of the former prestigious collection of Howard and Gwen Laurie Smits. Many pieces of the Smits collection are pictured in the book “Color and Fire”. Pictures should tell the story. This is a consigned piece so prices are firm. Large Shigeyoshi Ichino iron oxide on hakame studio pottery onion vase. Condition is new “Used”. This unusual but beautiful onion vase comes from Shigeyoshi Ichino whilst he was a resident potter at the leach pottery in st ives. The pot is in PERFECT condition standing an impresive 150mm high and wide. The brushed hakame glaze is a ground for the delicate beautiful iron oxide painting of the wheat sheaf. The pot is perfectly thrown and true in a heavily grogged stoneware. The pot has the St Ives stamp and the personal stamp if Ichino. Shigeyoshi Ichino, from the Tamba region of Japan, worked at the Leach Pottery from 1969-73: Bernard and Janet Leach were introduced to Shigeyoshi. S father, Tanso, by Shoji Hamada in the early 1950s. Janet Leach then went on to study under Tanso for two years. Shigeyoshi died in 2011 and the works for sale were made in Japan.
