This beautifully elegant Jane Hamlyn teapot is as good as the day it was finished. It stands 18cmH with the teapot itself standing 10.5cm tall (excl lid) and a base diameter also of 10.5cm. It is signed on the back JH. It is in her well known, typical style using simple, elegant form and subtle, natural salt glaze, featuring incised decoration and a distinctive loop handle. Her pieces are highly regarded for their craftsmanship and usability. Size: 17 cm to top of lid, 13 cm height to rim. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This is a very interesting piece by Jane Hamlyn, dating from the period when she was making salt glaze ware but before she developed the signature style for which she is best known. This piece shows the influence of Mick Casson, Jane’s tutor at Harrow College of Art, in its precise potting, strong score lines defining the shape, and painterly use of slips and oxides to create pattern. It also shows some of the development Jane later became famous for, including rouletting of lines and impressed stamps. But all in all, it is a very attractive piece of work. Jane Hamlyn’s impressed mark is near the foot. Jane Hamlyn (born 1940) is one of the key exponents of salt glazing in the British studio pottery world. Her impressive CV boasts many awards, and her work is to be found in all major galleries and museums dealing with ceramic art. She is a Fellow and former chair of the Craft Potters’ Association and was appointed an MBE in 2022 for services to pottery and ceramics.
