Size: 15.5cm tall, 9.5 cm across rim, belly about 12 cm wide. Condition: Very good condition. There is a flat chip on the foot-rim, which may have been caused on removal from the kiln (sometime a stray glaze spot gets fused to the foot). This chip is not visible on display. This vase is a personally made piece by David Leach and carries his mark and the Lowerdown Pottery mark on the inside of the foot. It is decorated using a resist method with David’s signature “foxglove” motif, which reveals the tenmoku glaze underneath the overglaze which looks like ash glaze with the addition of dolomite. The thick overglaze has run in the firing to produce some wonderful curtained effects. Inside the vase is black/brown tenmoku and that glaze is also on the inside and outside of the foot. The vase is fired to stoneware. After learning his craft with his father, David set up the Lowerdown Pottery in Devon in 1955, and forged his own style with the intention of making domestic ware which was a real alternative to industrially produced pots. He also continued to make decorative items such as this vase, and his best work ranks among the most the most coveted studio pots.

Excellent condition overall and a nice clean example. No damage chips or cracks to note except for one very small flea bite to the edge of the handle which i have tried to photograph as best as i can, very had to spot and doesn’t detract imo as only noticeable under very close inspection. See pictures for condition also. Stamped near the base with Davids personal DL stamp and also the Lowerdown Pottery stamp. Overall a nice piece that I have had stored away for many years in a display cabinet. 27 cm high approximately. Heavy piece due to its large size at 2.2 kg approximately. A signature will be required upon receipt of parcel. I pack well and use quality packing peanuts and adequate protection as my feed back shows. A little info about the potter. David Leach was born in Tokyo in 1911, and was first taught to pot not by his father Bernard but by Shoji Hamada. He studied at North Staffs Technical College and in 1930 joined the Leach Pottery where he stayed, on and off, for twenty-five years. He helped the family business in artistic, practical, technical and managerial capacities. In 1953 he headed the ceramics department of Loughborough College. He started the Aylesford Pottery in 1954, handing it over a year later to Colin Pearson. After the handover of Aylesford Pottery he moved to Bovey Tracey in Devon and set up Lowerdown Pottery. He was awarded the O. E in 1987, and is important for his development of porcelain suitable for studio pottery and his services to education. David died in February, 2005. His three sons; John, Jeremy and Simon are all potters.
