Studio Pottery Vase With Early impressed stamp #399. There are some tiny flea bites to the glaze on the rim but otherwise completely free of damage or repair. It is important for any prospective purchaser to properly understand this piece. I have intimated that the vase was made in America. That may not be the case as the mark to the left is not his Stillwater pottery mark. All the research I have completed has not identified this mark. This time was very fluid for Warren, he had left the Leach pottery after serving an apprenticeship there. He organised for Bernard Leach to come to America and lecture. I believe if the second impressed mark was identified then the vase would be worth more. I have checked the marks project and the British studio pottery marks and there is nothing similar. The cost will vary from country to country from courier to courier and will depend upon weight and size of the parcel when packed. Thank you for looking at my items which will be updated regularly.

A very fine large stoneware charger by leading post-war American potter Warren MacKenzie. Classic orange shino glaze with abstract trailed decoration in copper. Potter’s mark to the underside, part-filled with glaze (some of MacKenzie’s work is marked, but he also went through periods of leaving his work unmarked according to Mingei principles). Excellent condition, as new. Dimensions (approximate): 33cm x 5cm. Warren MacKenzie was one of the most important American potters of the post-war period, strongly influenced by the principles set out by Bernard Leach, Hamada Shoji and Yanagi Soetsu. This is an excellent example of his work and relatively uncommon on the British market. I’ve not really been very sure how to price this. Galleries in America are now asking several hundred dollars for a tea bowl by MacKenzie and comfortably into four-figures for a very large charger (both of which would have absolutely horrified him, as far as I can tell – but if that’s what the market will bear it is what it is, a tension that’s always been at the heart of this sort of thing). So I’m trying to pitch it somewhere in the middle, not wanting to hold out for gallery price but also not wanting to let it go for too little given the direction of travel on prices and given the potter’s importance. Marked with his stamp mark as shown. 4 inches, the top is 3 1/2 inches wide, the base is approx. 3 inches wide and it is approx. 4 1/4 wide at the widest. Beautiful – marked Clary Illian Studio Art Pottery Flower Vase – Warren MacKenzie, Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach influence. New – Mint Condition. This is a beautiful Clary Illian Vase. The glaze is a beautiful White Shino with ash. The Vase measures 7 3/4 inches tall x 5 inches in wide. I love this forms and her style. This is an opportunity to own a wonderful authentic piece of Clary’s work. Clary graduated from the University of Iowa in 1963, after receiving her BFA in ceramics. From 1964 1965, she was an apprentice at the Bernard Leach Pottery in England. Since that time, shes been a full-time maker of utilitarian pottery, with studios in various locations throughout Iowa. She has taught workshops around the country and was a sabbatical replacement instructor at the University of Iowa and at the Kansas City Art Institute. After 45 years of working exclusively in porcelain and stoneware, Illian has recently switched to earthenware. The pots are still intended for use, but are more decorated and lighthearted, if not downright frivolous. This is just one piece of my large collection. I will be listing multiple pieces of Clary’s and Warren’s work. I will also be listing work from his students and his contemporaries.
