Back Impressed: “POOLE POTTERY ENGLAND” Dolphin Hand Annotated “K BROWN SK” Artist’s Monogram For Karen Brown c. 1990s-2005 Lid: Hand Inscribed “SK” & Monogram. Poole Pottery was founded in 1873 in Poole Quayside in Dorset. The business continued to produce unique and ground breaking pottery including amongst others the “Delphis” range which was launched 1963. The Poole factory moved away from the quay in 1999 – significantly with Master Potter Alan White throwing the final pot at the Quayside March 2001, ending 128 years of pottery production there. Production continued at the new site in Sopers Lane Poole until its’ closure in 2006. Many gifted artists and ceramic designers have been associated with Poole Pottery over its’ 128 years including Alan White who joined in 1973 and Anita Harris who for over 10 years from the 1990s was a Senior Designer and Decorator. In 2011, Poole Pottery was taken over once again, by Denby Pottery and currently a shop and studio have been kept as popular attractions on the Poole Quayside where Master Potter Alan White can still be seen demonstrating. Several designers and ceramic artists at the site help design new collections available direct from the Studio website.

The vase stands about 41cm tall and is incised Pol Chambost and a date that I think is 1973. I found the following bio online. Pol Chambost was born in France in 1906. After studying at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués, he began his career following in his father’s footsteps, becoming a funeral sculptor. A few years later, he discovered ceramics, which he first used in the family marble workshop and then to create his first pieces. He developed a passion for the art and opened his own workshop. Subsequently, he developed his art and techniques. He met with great success, not only in France but also in the United States. He played a major role in the Chambre syndicale des céramistes d’art. He was also present at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon des Arts Ménagers. The vase is in perfect condition. I can find no flaws. Please study the photos carefully to satisfy yourself with the condition of the piece.

Magnificent Large John Ward Studio Pottery Bowl. Wonderful piece by an internationally acclaimed artist. Stunning glaze and form. There was a tiny hairline crack which has been fully restored to museum standard by the renowned restorer Fiona Hutchinson. The bowl now looks spectacular and rings perfectly. This listing is for a VERY large MUSEUM LEVEL vase by DAVID LEACH (1911 -2005) who was the first son of BERNARD LEACH (1887 – 1979). It is very large at 13 inches tall (33 cm) by 6 1/2 inches in diameter. This is a quite substantial piece at 10 1/2 pounds. It was thrown on a wheel and then paddled into flattish sides that are still somewhat convex. It is made with porcelain clay with a rich black / brown overall temmoku glaze. The primary design motif is one of Mr. Leach’s often used Willow Tree motifs in a striking gold color achieved using a wax resist technique with iron oxide. The Willow Tree is incredibly simple and graceful with sweeping drooping limbs with a hint of foliage at the limb tips. The temmoku glaze breaks beautifully on the mushroom cap shaped rim and also the shoulder edge to reveal striking highlights of gold. This is the nicest David Leach piece I have encountered. It is in perfect condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. It is signed with his DL cypher. This indicates that he threw the vase as well as glazed it instead of having an apprentice involved. This piece was produced at the Lowerdown Pottery at Bovey Tracey, Devon, England. David leach is represented in many museums around the world including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
