An exceptional large wood fired vase by leading Japanese Mashiko potter Ken Matsuzaki. Coil built and faceted. Vivid blue-green cascade of natural ash glaze like an ice floe. The raw clay has flashed a beautiful peachy colour in the wood kiln. Excellent condition, as new. With the original signed box. Incised potter’s mark to the underside. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to look at and handle a number of Mr Matsuzaki’s shino wares now and this is one of the best of his shino tea bowls that I’ve seen. The white glaze crawls are thick and highly tactile.

Ken Matsuzaki Studio Pottery Shoji Hamada, Mashiko, Shimaoka Interest, including wooden box, cloth and papers. The piece measures approximately 25cm in height and 12cm width. Born in 1950 in Tokyo. Matsuzaki’s life was filled with art and culture and his family’s influence began to show when, around the age of 16, Matsuzaki developed an interest in ceramics. Ken trained under living national treasure Shimaoka Tatsuzo, you can see the influence in this piece of his master, possibly using the same mould.
