Bernard Leach St Ives standardware cake plate (waves / Tree design). Initially designed by David and Bernard Leach these plates appeared in the Standard ware range from 1946 onwards until at the latest 1976. They did not appear in that year’s catalogue. The plates were made as Cake plates in three sizes – as photographed. This is a medium sized plate 23 cms in diameter. It is in excellent condition without chips, cracks or repairs. Whilst this plate is standard ware it is sought after hence its price. I would put it on a par with the’Z’ bowl in terms of collecting but I see more Z bowls than plates. An excellent medium sized torn oval by Alan Wallwork. Height: 7.5 inches. This piece is an excellent example of Wallwork’s pottery. Wallwork would tear pots apart to give an irregular and organic opening. The effect of this pot is dramatic with the brown glaze on the outer edges and the white central section pierced and accented with blue (the interior entirely blue). Marked with Wallwork’s “AW” mark on the bottom, with the original label with exhibition number attached.. Made during his period in France. An Alan Wallwork medium Cleft Oval. Height: 7.25 inches. This is an older piece, probably from the 1980s. It has a textured cleft. While the coloring is subtle, as is often the case, many surprising color flashes can be seen: mauve, tan, and turquoise. Marked with Walwork’s “AW” signature on the bottom. Condition notes: There is no post-production damage on this piece, but the bottom is a little uneven from where the base stuck to the kiln floor. Wallwork has finished off the bottom so that it sits flatly. Also note that on the light side of the piece is a slight bloat. It doesn’t show up in the pictures well as it doesn’t cause any cracking in the surface of the pot. Apparently this was not a concern, as the piece is not marked as first quality Wallwork would score through the bottom of the pot to indicate seconds. 1931 is one of the major handbuilders of the British studio pottery movement.
