Pair of Bretby Art Nouveau Pottery Wall Plates/Chargers with Geisha Scenes – 1880s. We are proud to offer these beautiful circular earthenware plaques by Bretby, probably designed by Henry Tooth. With applied details possibly hand-worked and hand-painted, decorated Japonesme in black with applied Chrysanthemums and butterflies painted in gold and red. The border of both also in black with an Art Nouveau designed border. There is a very similar example in the Victoria & Albert museum, London with a slight difference on the border. They are both in mirror image. Impressed marks Bretby and the number 1478. One with a hairline of 4cm on the border on the underside which cannot be seen from the frontside, but has been filled. The other in perfect condition. No chips or restorations – very rare to see a pair together, the museum example mentioned earlier is a single example. Geoffrey Eastop was an English potter. Eastop was born in London, where he studied at the Croydon School of Art and Goldsmiths’ College. He also studied at the Academie Ranson in Paris. During World War II, Eastop served as an office in the Royal Artillery, seeing action in the Netherlands and being lucky to survive. Beautiful delicate vase in monochrome with a slight green tinge. Has a hairline crack probably done in firing, have to magnify to see, hence price. Measures: 12cm x 9cm. Absolutely stunning piece of British pottery. This listing is for a VERY large MUSEUM LEVEL vase by DAVID LEACH (1911 -2005) who was the first son of BERNARD LEACH (1887 – 1979). It is very large at 13 inches tall (33 cm) by 6 1/2 inches in diameter. This is a quite substantial piece at 10 1/2 pounds. It was thrown on a wheel and then paddled into flattish sides that are still somewhat convex. It is made with porcelain clay with a rich black / brown overall temmoku glaze. The primary design motif is one of Mr. Leach’s often used Willow Tree motifs in a striking gold color achieved using a wax resist technique with iron oxide. The Willow Tree is incredibly simple and graceful with sweeping drooping limbs with a hint of foliage at the limb tips. The temmoku glaze breaks beautifully on the mushroom cap shaped rim and also the shoulder edge to reveal striking highlights of gold. This is the nicest David Leach piece I have encountered. It is in perfect condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. It is signed with his DL cypher. This indicates that he threw the vase as well as glazed it instead of having an apprentice involved. This piece was produced at the Lowerdown Pottery at Bovey Tracey, Devon, England. David leach is represented in many museums around the world including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IS A VERY HANDSOME MUSEM LEVEL VASE BY F. CARLTON BALL WITH SGRAFFITO CARVED LINES IN THE DESIGN MOTIF BY NOTED ARTIST AARON BOHROD. THIS CONSISTS OF TWO BULLS AND TWO SUNS. ONE BULL IS LOOKING STRAIGHT AHEAD AND THE OTHER IS LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU. THEY ARE COMPLETE WITH HORNS AS WELL AS GENITALIA!! THIS IS A VERY LARGE VASE AT 14 3/16 INCHES TALL BY 6 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND WEIGHS A SUBSTANTIAL 7 LBS 8 OZ. THE NECK AND RIM ARE A CREAM COLOR WITH SOME IRON SPECKS BURNING THROUGH FROM THE CLAY BODY. THE BALANCE OF THE VASE IS CREAM WITH A BROWN WASH OVER THE UPPER AND LOWER AREAS THAT EXHIBITS A VERY INTERESTING SPECKLED TEXTURE OVER THE CREAM BASE COLOR. THE SGRAFFITO LINES BY BOHROD ARE A DARK BROWN COLOR AND QUITE DRAMATIC. THE FOOT AREA IS VERY BROAD AT A FULL INCH+ WIDE AND IS CUT DEEPLY INTO THE SIDE OF THE VASE WHICH HAS THE EFFECT OF LIFTING THE PIECE OFF THE SURFACE IT SITS ON VERY NICELY. THE LIGHTER LINES ON THE FOOT (PHOTOS 6, 7 AND 8) ARE NOT SCUFFS. I BELIEVE THEY REPRESENT A DIFFERENT COLOR CLAY THAT WAS MIXED INTO THE REST OF THE CLAY IN A PUG MILL WHICH IS COMMONLY USED IN MOST CERAMIC STUDIOS TO RE-USE CLAY TRIMMINGS. IN PHOTO #6 ABOVE THE F. BALL SIGNATURE IS WHAT APPEARS TO BE A VERY SHALLOW ANGLED FIRING CRACK, PERHAPS FROM THE DIFFERENT CLAY MIXED IN WITH THE DARKER CLAY. IT IS SIGNED BY BOTH ARTISTS. INCLUDED IS A HARDBOUND COPY OF’A SKETCHBOOK’ BY BOHROD ILLUSTRATING HIS MANY POTTERY DESIGNS AND A PRESS PHOTO OF BOTH ARTISTS IN THE 1950’S WITH A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING ON THE BACK.
