A stoneware vessel in an oval form with dipped rim with glazed by British studio ceramist John Ward (1938-) circa 1997. The form of this vessel is minimalistic and intentionally ambiguous between being a pot and a vase. Being organic and earthy with harmonious proportion is the artist’s iconic aesthetic. The vessel has a slight textured surface and is covered in a lava-black matt glaze with a soft bronze wash. The shimmering effect is very subtle and can escape the eyes of a casual observer. An unusual and rather mysterious piece from the artist’s repertoire. The base is branded with the artist’s seal and initial “JW”. From a UK collection. John Ward’s ceramic artwork is found in the permanent collections of many leading art museums including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Biography (courtesy of Oxford Ceramic Gallery): The leading hand-builder John Ward was born in 1938 and trained at Camberwell College of Arts in the 1960s. He is one of a number of significant modern potters to have concentrated on the pared down individual vessel form, most particularly the bowl, as a touchstone for exploration. His generally simple work has been augmented by more complex structures, the shapes cut and altered, perhaps with abstract, geometric decoration and cut-away rims that give some of his pieces an architectural quality. In addition to urban surfaces, his work evokes honed natural forms, the kind of bonier, elemental landscape he has lived in since he moved close to the Welsh coast in 1979. His best pots speak eloquently of the limitless language of the bowl and globular jar, their sculptural and metaphorical resonances. Height: 8.3 in (21.09 cm). Width: 8 in (20.32 cm). A superb stoneware bottle by David Frith. David and Margaret Frith set up their first workshop in Denbigh 1963. They moved to The Malt House in 1976, an 18th. Century woollen mill which was later used as a brewery hence its name. The mill is situated on the banks of the river Ystrad, on the outskirts of the market town of Denbigh, in the beautiful Vale of Clwyd in North Wales. Although the mill never had a water wheel it is built on the banks of the river affording a riverside workshop and showroom. It has a bridge joining the main workshops to the slip house. Clay storage and kiln. Sheds in the garden on the opposite bank. There are several woodkilns and large and small gas kilns for the firings. David with his mastery of the potter’s wheel makes large pieces decorated with his personal style of hakeme, rope impress and waxed motifs under heavy reduction overglazes and combined with ashed surfaces. David Leach Lowerdown Studio Pottery Oval Vase – 6 Inches Tall. The vase features two swirly lines, with orange dots around the piece. This pattern repeats on both sides. The Lowerdown stamp is on the base rim. David Andrew Leach (7 May 1911 15 February 2005) was an English studio potter and the eldest son of Bernard Leach and Muriel Hoyle Leach, Bernard’s first wife. David Leach was born in Tokyo, Japan, where his father met Shoji Hamada, and came to England in 1920. He began an apprenticeship with his father at St Ives, Cornwall, in 1930 and trained as a pottery manager at the North Staffordshire Technical College, 1935-37. He subsequently managed the Leach Pottery, changing over from a wood-burning to an oil-burning kiln and modernising the workshop. In 1955 Leach left St Ives to set up the Lowerdown Pottery at Bovey Tracey, Devon, where he became known for his porcelain. Rice and Gowing describe his work as follows: The style was very close to that of his father, but the difference in their nature made for very different pots. A fluted, celadon bowl by David Leach looks nothing like the same thing made by his father. The Bernard Leach bowl would be thick, bold, rough, opaque with wide fluting and little difference in colour between body and glaze. David Leach’s would be thin, smooth, translucent, and with precise, narrow fluting and a wide range of colour – from jade green to’ying ch’ing’ blue – on a white body. He was chairman of the Craft Potters’ Association of Great Britain in 1967 and exhibited widely in the UK as well as New York, Washington, Tokyo, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Rotterdam, Düsseldorf, Heidelberg and Munich. In 1987 he was appointed OBE for his work in studio pottery and his services to education. The piece has a height of 6 inches (15.25cm), a width of 4 inches (10.25cm) and a depth of 3 inches (7.5cm). An excellent medium sized torn oval by Alan Wallwork. Height: 7.5 inches. This piece is an excellent example of Wallwork’s pottery. Wallwork would tear pots apart to give an irregular and organic opening. The effect of this pot is dramatic with the brown glaze on the outer edges and the white central section pierced and accented with blue (the interior entirely blue).
