Size: 32.5 cm in diameter. The bowl stands 10 cm high externally. Light crazing as expected. Paul Young draws his inspiration and his techniques from 17th and 18th century English traditional slipware pottery, although he also pays mind to European folk art. This lovely bowl is typical of his work, potted in a red earthenware clay painted with white slip liquid clay and decorated with tube-lined and painted slip, and the fired under a golden coloured glaze. The potter has paid full attention to all the details, such as the neat throwing rings in the well of the bowl, and the decorated outside and base. Paul Young’s impressed mark is on the footrim. Paul trained in the late 1970’s at Sheffield and Chesterfield College of Art close to where his ceramic heroes Ralph Wood, Thomas Whieldon and John Astbury worked. His studio is now near Nuneaton in Warwiskshire. His aim is to fulfil a need, a desire and a passion for making, and his hope is to convey a joy, narrative and intrigue for the viewer. RARE Large Paul Jackson Studio Pottery Water Jug. The unique character of Paul Jacksons work derives from two interrelated processes. Each piece is first thrown on the wheel, then subtly altered in form giving the pot an individual character and strength defined by a journey of discovery. The journey continues during decoration, where the pots elegance and sense of balance grow directly out of Pauls concern for harmony between form, colour, and the painted surface. Paul uses white earthenware to construct his energetic and sinuous forms. The clay allows for the dynamic shaping of the pieces which form the vessels which go on to be given diverse and colourful decoration. Recently Paul has diversified in his working methods, using local stoneware and porcelain in a salt glaze kiln. This gave rise to the porcelain series which celebrated the effects of the glazes in their own right, albeit with some references to the coastline and rock formations of North Cornwall. Paul Jackson qualified in Studio Ceramics in 1977 at Harrow School of Art. Following a short period teaching in London, he relocated to Cornwall, where he established his pottery in 1979. He moved to his present home at Helland Bridge, where he works in a studio converted from an old chapel, in 1989. He has exhibited regularly and widely in both the UK and the US, and his work can be found in many major galleries. Wood fired ceramic vessel with hand-cut lower body and pronounced surface firing marks and ash glaze. It is marked with the artist’s incised signature and date 87. Also comes with a handwritten note from the collector and an exhibition invitation postcard of the similar works. This piece has a very strong Japanese wabi-sabi appeal which is the aesthetic influence of the aritst’s work and makes a visually arresting center piece for any interior. Paul Chaleff is known for his large scale wood fired ceramic sculptures and vessels. He also created a large body of wheel thrown functional vessels. His vessels are strongly influenced by Japanese pottery, especially the work of one of Japans National Living Treasures, Takeshi Nakazato. Chaleff was one of the first American potters using a Japanese style Anagama kiln and became a leader in the introduction of this form of wood-burning kiln. In 1989, he began a regular collaboration with the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. Over a period of thirteen years, they created nearly 50 works, both figurative and abstract. Caros sculpture has had direct influence on Chaleffs work as has the sculpture of Isamu Noguchi, and the ceramics of John Mason and Lucie Rie. Biography is from the Mark Project.
