A fairly rare faceted studio pottery vase in the early Chinese manner by leading British potter Malcolm Pepper. Stoneware (I believe, rather than porcelain). Thrown and faceted form with applied lugs. Brushed red copper floral decoration over a crackled cream semi-matt glaze. Excellent condition, as new. Unmarked, as is the case with a fair amount of Pepper’s work (apparently he took to marking his pots at the end of his career after a curator complained that they were being mistaken for antique Chinese examples, which, while a problem, also seems like a fairly high compliment). Dimensions (approximate): 18cm x 15cm x 15cm. A lovely quality vase and a very good example of Pepper’s work. Malcolm Pepper was a very highly regarded potter of the post-war period, primarily producing works heavily inspired by Song Dynasty Chinese ceramics. Tragically, he suffered an early death in the 1980s, cutting off a flourishing and highly-regarded career just as he was receiving significant gallery attention. A good rare British studio pottery vase. By one of the leading post war potters Malcolm Pepper (1934 – 1980). The cylindrical stoneware body with sixteen cut facet panels. With an even iron brown wash back ground, and four painted roundels. Please ignore reflections on photos. 3/4 inches (27 cm) high. Condition; Fine, perfect no damage or repairs. Marks; Slightly flooded glaze seal mark to side. For ref; Please see last photo for another vase from the same range. Malcolm Pepper studied pottery at the Poole School of Art in the early 1960s under the tutelage of Philip Wadsworth (a Staite Murray pupil at the RCA). During the 1970s he had a studio in Brighton where he produced stoneware and porcelain on the wheel, very much in the Chinese tradition. Much of his early work was unmarked and it wasn’t until the late 70s that he began to mark his work. In 1980 a major exhibition of over 100 of his pots was arranged at the Casson Gallery in London and it was extremely successful. However, Pepper died shortly before the exhibition opened.
