Authentic and signed appropriately with the Pillin symbol. Information About the Artist. Polish-American ceramist during the 20th century. Born in Czstochowa, Poland, in 1909, she immigrated to the United States in 1924 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. In 1927, she met and married Ukrainian immigrant William Pillin. With the majority of subjects involving women, horses, cats, fishes, and other animals. Widely considered to be one of the preeminent contemporary studio potters of the 20th century, pottery was her canvas. But her work is not really about the pottery, as such; it’s about her luminous painting: the one-of-a-kind, beautifully abstracted figures and jewel-toned Mid-Century Modern motifs. She produced most of her work from her home studio, which was set up in the family’s garage in Los Angeles. She perfected the technique of painting on wet clay with colored clays. After decorating each pot, the pottery was fired then covered with transparent glaze and re-fired. The end result was abstract art on a piece of pottery with a luminous, glass-like finish that is unmistakably recognizable. What’s more, she designed her paintings to embrace the shape of each and every ceramic vessel. After her one-person show at the Chicago Art Institute, a reviewer for the Chicago Sun Times noted, Her work, direct and colorful, is expressed with a fine feeling for design and a vital sensitive line. Her paintings are personal, with all influences well understood and assimilated. As with any hand-painted American art pottery, it’s the design that usually gets collectors excited. Her designs typically cover the surface of the vessel. A tall vase might show a thin, stretched-out figure of a woman. Multiple images were common. It’s not surprising for a vase to have three or four subjects encircling it. Of her designs, females received the most attention, although children and men were also incorporated into the artwork. Among animals, horses, birds and fish are often seen. Other subject matter ranges from cats to nudes, from circus performers to dancers to Picasso-like portraits. One critic argued that it is her unique, almost naive designs that make Pillin pottery so desirable. She was an original: creative, inventive, self-confident, and fearless. Quirky features boldly typified her designs. One writer observed, People fall in love with that. The pottery was typically hand-thrown. Vintage Granular William + Polia Pillin Vase, Mid-century Modern, c. This is a collaborative work by William and Polia Pillin. Spherical vase form, with a narrow neck extending from the top. This vase is quite large and substantial, with a very appealing mid-century look. Decorated with a cobalt yellow underglaze, covered with a very thin, granular gray-green poured overglaze. Glossy finish with a lot of variegation. This is in excellent condition, with some wear and roughness on the base due to its age. Inscribed with “W+P Pillin” on base underglaze, with the usual three stilt pulls. Dimensions: 8-1/2″ high x 7″ in diameter (at widest); the neck extends 1″ high and is 3/4″ in diameter; the base is 2 in diameter. Very Fine Vintage Polia Pillin Low Vase, Cave Painting Motif, c. This is a spectacular ceramic low vase or enclosed bowl by Polia Pillin. It’s more of an advanced collector piece. It’s quite large and heavy, and very eye catching and appealing. There’s some depth-of-field distortion in my photos I wasn’t able to correct; this piece is wider and flatter than it appears in my photos. This piece is in an angular shouldered form, with a wide, slightly rimmed opening in the top (almost in the classic flying saucer form, which fits the era it was created in). The decoration is on an applied, mottled ochre ground, and features renderings of bison (or possibly well-fed deer) clearly inspired by cave paintings. They’re painted in black slip, and polychromed in rusts, reds, greens and browns. The figures surround the top surface, and are in a ring of five figures. The rim and bottom 3/8 near the base are lined in black slip. Unusually for a Pillin piece, all of the decoration is on top. So, this displays very well on top of a waist-high counter or furniture piece, or any surface you tend to look down at. Dimensions: 12″ in diameter at the widest x 5-1/4″ high; the opening of the rim is 5-1/2″ in diameter; the base is 6″ in diameter. This is in immaculate original condition, with typical overall light crazing, and some minuscule in-the-making bubble bursts to the surface of the overglaze. Signed in black slip on the bottom underglaze, with the usual three stilt pulls. Note: The white hotspots and reflections in the overglaze are from the lights.
