The work of Peter Wills, a professional potter since 1989, has evolved over the years in the context of attention to detail, balanced form/decoration, and passion – all of which he believes are crucial. Bernard Leach’s “Book of the Potter” and the whole spirit underlying this work had one of his strongest influences. We were also inspired by Chinese pots from the Song and Tang dynasties, as well as the works of major European potters of the 20th century, such as Lucy Rea, Hans Koper and Michael Cardew. The potter artist and one of the first members of the CPA, Derek Davis, as well as teacher Sue Nichols, had a deep and lasting influence on his work. His work has been widely exhibited in the UK, as well as in Italy, Brussels, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, the UAE, Germany and the USA. The commission included representatives from his local council and the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend! In the spring of 1998, he received his most prestigious order to date, when His Majesty’s government asked him to make bowls for gifts to nineteen heads of European states who were visiting the Cardiff summit! His pots have traveled all over the world and can be found in public and private collections in the UK and around the world. In his small workshop, Peter used to work with white clay, which he mixed according to his own recipes, but lately he has been working with English porcelain Valentine Clays. Vintage PETER WILLS Studio Bowl? Ollectible Mint Condition. Mint condition – No cracks or chips. Potter’s seal mark & signature to base. Porcelain thrown bowl with a pale pink and manganese glaze, wood ash & blue glazed. Signed by the artist, Peter Wills. There is craquelure on the lacquer layer of porcelain, a microscopic spider web of cracks, because the potter was able to repeat the ancient Chinese technology of the Sung and Tang dynasties. The work of Peter Wills, a professional potter since 1989, has been evolving over the years within the context of attention to detail, balanced form/decoration, and passion – all of which he believes are crucial. Of his numerous influences, Bernard Leach’s “A Potter’s Book”, and the whole ethos behind that work, was one of the first and strongest. Sung and Tang Dynasty Chinese pots have also been an inspiration, along with major 20th-century European potters such as Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and Michael Cardew. Profound and lasting early influences came from the artist-potter and early CPA member Derek Davis; and also tutor Sue Nichols. Widely exhibited in Britain, his work has also been shown in Italy, Brussels, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, the UAE, Germany, and the USA. Commissions undertaken have included those from his local Council and The Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend! In the spring of 1998 he gained his most prestigious commission to date when asked by HM Government to make bowls for them to present as gifts to the nineteen visiting European Heads of State attending a Summit in Cardiff! His pots have travelled far and wide and can be found in public and private collections in Britain and around the world. In his small studio, Peter formerly worked with fine white clays that he blended to his own recipes; however, more recent work has been undertaken with a blend of English porcelain from Valentine Clays. His current production is almost exclusively one-off bowls and vases. Most work is thrown on a potter’s wheel, raw-glazed when bone dry and once fired to 1280°C. The lure of new glazes he finds irresistible and he is constantly experimenting with and developing new glaze recipes. He is a member of South Wales Potters, and a Professional member of The Craft Potters Association of Great Britain. Inspiration for me comes from simple things; pots from ancient China to modern Europe; the looseness, freedom and life of Bizen wares, the wonderful colours, textures and forms of Lucie Rie’s work; the inverted profile of a hat, a blackbird singing outside my bedroom window. I aim for balanced form, attention to detail and life; I would love the ability to produce pots of a calibre that would make people catch their breath – however for now, if I can occasionally stir the heart, I’ll be content.

Please be aware this is a Guinomi and not a YUNOMI. A YUNOMI is a Japanese tea bowl however a Guinomi is a sake bowl. For obvious reasons it is smaller than the tea bowl and would be the equivalent of a’shot glass’ to put it into a modern context. It measures 4.5 cm in height and 4.5 cm rim diameter. It has a ribbed grey decoration and is in good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Clear impressed mark for Phil Rogers. Given this items size it is also possible that it could be used as an egg cup.
