Huge, Vintage Antonio Prieto Studio Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this impressive studio art pottery vase by the listed California artist, Antonio Prieto. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This decorated bottle form has a narrow mouth and a deep foot area (apparent if you look beneath the pot). The glaze is purplish blue and gray with brown mottling; there are vague, abstract, round patterns to the mid-section of the exterior. This piece stands approximately 18 1/4 inches tall; it has a maximum width of about 5 5/8 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 7 pounds 7.4 ounces. This would be a fine addition to a collection of American studio ceramics. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC), the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA), and Alfred University. He was husband to Eunice Prieto. He taught at the CCAC and at Mills College, where he was an influence to many now famous studio potters. He exhibited widely during his lifetime, and his work is now held by important museums and in private collections. Condition The vase looks very good overall, with no cracks or chips. It has light wear. Variations in glaze application are as made. Also as made, there are a couple of brown crease-type firing flaws on the exterior sides; the one shown in Photo 4 is approximately 1/2 inch long, and the one shown in Photo 9 is about 1 1/8 inches long. Vintage Katherine Choy Art Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Katherine Choy art pottery vase. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This hand thrown pot has abstract, glazed decoration in light and dark brown. It has a white porcelain clay body. It stands about 3 1/2 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of about 5 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 1 pound 1.9 ounces. This would be a fine and rare example to add to a collection of American studio ceramics. She is listed in the Vasefinder Museum. Per Vasefinder, Choy was originally from Hong Kong. She was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland, California, where she received B. Choy completed post-graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, where she was a student of Maija Grotell. She became head of the ceramics department at Tulane University’s Newcomb College. Choy co-founded the Clay Art Center of Port Chester, New York with Henry Okamoto. She exhibited at 6000 Years Art in Clay at the Los Angeles County Fair in 1952, and also at the Nationals from 1949 to 1956. Per the Smithsonian Design Museum, Choy passed away from pneumonia at the age of 29. Condition This pot looks great overall, with no chips or cracks. It has very light wear. A small bit of extra clay to the side is as made (see Photo 2). Variations in glazing are as made. Terms of Sale 1.
