Janet Leach for Leach pottery Saki bottle and 3 sake cups. The two cups were slightly different sizes but similar in style. My suggestion is that the cups may have been made and fired at different times hence their slightly different sizes. They are all of the same design. All four of the pieces offered for sale bear the Janet Leach impressed stamp and the St Ives Leach pottery mark. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or other damage to any of the four pieces. Janet Leach for Leach studio pottery sake bottle. Janet Leach (nee Darnell) is a World famous potter. Her work is sought after by collectors of Leach pottery and by collectors who specifically like her work. Born in America in 1918 she was taught by Shoji Hamada in California and later went to work with him in Japan. This was unique at the time. Janet worked at the Leach pottery in St Ives, running the business after her husband passed in 1978 until she herself passed away in 1997. Janet’s work was somewhat overshadowed in her lifetime by Bernard’s work, her work being very different from Bernard’s although also influenced by the early Japanese potters. Janet trained under Shoji Hamada and spent time in Japan being the first foreign woman to be invited there. His influence can be seen in much of her work. Her work is free flowing and collected worldwide. My own collection of her work is centred on her vases and bottles. Only my personal choice. In reviewing my collection I have decided to sell some of my pieces to focus on acquiring others more pertinent to it. The Sake pourer is free from damage of any kind or any restoration or repair. It bears Janet’s personal impressed mark together with the St Ives Leach mark. This only applies to packages weighing less than 2Kg. The charge to different countries will differ quite substantially. EXCEPTIONAL JAPANESE MASHIKO STYLE POTTERY SAKE BOTTLE VASE JOMAN ZOGAN STYLE. This piece shows exceptional form and craftsmanship along with very eye appealing glaze/surface. The surface of the oval spaces shows impressed lines similar to those achieved with the Joman Zogam technique perfected by legendary potter Tatsuzo Shimaoka. Possible made in Mashiko in my opinion. There is a narrow and very shallow flake to the outside of the base otherwise this piece is in excellent condition with no other damage.
