A Brilliant John Pollex Studio Pottery Sculptural Vase with Matte Glaze. A very rare piece produced by John Pollex. Very possibly drawn on influence from time working as assistant to his mentor Colin Pearson. The pot is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. May show slight signs of but minimal wear to the base. Please see images which make up part of the description. Apx 24cm in height. John Pollex studied at Sir John Cass in Whitechapel from 1966-68; he went on to become Technician at Harrow College of Art during 1968-70. After Harrow he became assistant to Bryan Newman and Colin Pearson until 1971. He moved to Plymouth in the autumn of 1971 establishing a studio and gallery in the historic Barbican area. In 2000 he moved his studio to his house from where currently works.

A striking signed ceramic sculpture by Carol McNicholl, one of the most distinctive voices in British studio ceramics of the late 20th century. This piece is boldly architectural in form, constructed as a stacked, twisting vertical with layered cylindrical elements. Finished in a dramatic black glaze, it is animated with hand-painted yellow dots, stripes, and cross-hatched motifs that create rhythm, movement, and visual tension across the surface. McNicholl’s work is celebrated for its fearless use of pattern and its refusal to sit quietly as’pottery’. This piece reads as sculpture first, vessel second, and embodies the postmodern confidence of her mature work. The underside is clearly signed, confirming authorship. With Carol McNicholl’s recent passing, interest in her work has increased, and signed, sculptural examples such as this are becoming increasingly sought after.
