This is a beautiful hand crafted terracotta vase featuring a beautiful handcarved sgraffito motiff. The word “sgraffito” comes from the Italian word sgraffiare, which means “to scratch”. The technique involves applying a layer of contrasting color to a ceramic surface and then scratching through it to reveal the color of the clay or another layer underneath. The design on this vase is a modern, abstract, and organic pattern with curved lines and textured areas, which is characteristic of the mid-20th century studio pottery movement. The vase is likely a piece of West German pottery from the 1960s. This era saw a boom in ceramics production in West Germany, with many factories creating pieces that were both functional and decorative. This type of design is similar to the work of Franz Schwaderlapp for Sawa Ceramic, which was popular in West Germany in the 1960s. Although there are markings on the base, I can’t say for certain who made it as it’s quite hard to make out, it is likely a one of a kind piece. It is overall in a very good condition, just has some very minor imperfections ie, some flaking of the white. It is approximately 24cm high and 12.5cm in diameter and of a very good weight.

Usch Spettigue Studio Pottery – Attractive Sgraffito Lidded Pot – Makers Mark. Usch Spettigue was born in Germany and settled in England in 1963 with her English husband. She established her studio at Harkstead in 1975. Since then, she has exhibited widely in East Anglia, as well as in London, the West Country, York, the United States and Germany. Her pots are all thrown. They are porcelain, single-fired at 1220° C in an electric kiln. Some of her pots are decorated with sgraffito, inlay or wax resist. Creative use of slips and glazes on different clays vary texture and colour. At present she is also concentrating on pure form with a variety of large jugs and spherical pots with inturned tops. Some of these pots are carved when they are in a leather-hard state to give a deeply grooved surface. She is a selected member of the Anglian Potters Association and of the Suffolk Craft Society. Clears potters mark on the base SP. Recessed finial lid with intricate pattern and holes. In excellent condition, no chips or cracks. Large MICHAEL HAWKINS studio pottery vase of baluster form, with sgraffito decoration and impressed maker’s mark to base. Grey ground with red poppies flowers and trailing grey stems. A beautiful vase and definitely a statement piece. Height – 43 cm x 29 cm (approximately) diameter. Michael Hawkins was born in 1950 and trained as a potter at Redruth School of Art. He was a ceramics technician in Art Schools for 6 years before setting up his own workshop in 1976. This is a superb slab built vase that could be a candle holder. It is wood fired studio pottery with sgraffito decoration. The marks aren’t all that clear but I think it is an M with a P through it which is the mark for POWDERMILL POTTERY and the date looks to be 89 which would be the year after he began potting at Powdermill In Dartmoor. It’s a lovely piece that stands 7″ high and is 7″ across the base by 1.5 in depth. It is perfect with baize on the base to prevent scratching.
