Nic Collins large jar with shino glaze and scallop shell detail. Shino glazes were first developed in Japan during the mid-1500s. They are distinguished by their large feldspar content, minerals that lower the melting point of the glaze mixture and help bond its distinct elements. They generally range from milky whites and pinks to deep reds, oranges and greys depending on their makeup and firing and can vary hugely in appearance from potter to potter. Of particular interest in Shino wares is the phenomenon of’carbon trapping’, where carbon is caught within the glaze during the firing, creating bubble-like spots or dark grey patches on the surface of the pot. Though it is sometimes described as a glaze defect, this blushing effect can be especially attractive and is often sought after by potters. Natural ash glaze occurs in a wood fired kiln when ash particles carried around the kiln by the hot air and flames land and melt on the pots, often creating dramatic colour variations on their surfaces depending on their position in the kiln. Mizusashi (water-jar), tea equipment. Cylindrical form with lid. In good condition without any chips, cracks or repairs. Lisa’s work is very collectable and sought after. Measures 15.5cm in height and approximately 16 cm in diameter. Lisa very kindly responded stating that this was her work and that rather than incising or impressing her mark she signed it but it has been covered over by the glaze. Bless her she tried to describe where the signature was but I still couldn’t see it. I have to say that it is a very interesting piece which has caught my eye.

A large two handled dish by Nic Collins. The dish has many feldspar inclusions and is decorated with shells on the base where it is also signed by Nic. The bowl/dish measures 37 cm from handle to handle and 32 cm across its most narrow point. It weighs over 3.5 kg.
