Japanese Contemporary Studio Pottery Vase – “Sen no Tsubo” (Vessel of Lines) by Sato Miki. A powerful and museum-quality work of Japanese contemporary studio ceramics. By Sato Miki , a recognized ceramic artist from Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture, born June 13, 1945. Weight: Body 2.6kg / Total with box approx. Dimensions: H 23.5cm × W 19cm / Mouth diameter 11cm. (? – “Vessel of Lines”). Original signed wooden box. Provenance documents included: Original artist biography sheet and 1983. (New Art Newspaper) article featuring the work. The Work: This large egg-shaped vessel is an exceptional example of Sato Miki’s signature. The entire surface is wrapped in rhythmic horizontal bands of two alternating textures – smooth compressed clay and deeply incised dotted scoring – creating a hypnotic, almost textile-like quality reminiscent of ancient woven cloth or geological strata. The palette moves from warm sandy beige to deep slate blue-grey, with a luminous blue-green glaze pooling richly at the irregular, deliberately unfinished rim – a bold contrast that highlights the artist’s mastery of controlled spontaneity. The interior is glazed in deep black with flashes of cerulean blue. A hand-thrown studio pottery bottle vase signed by the maker and dated 1996. The vase features a rounded bulbous body with a tall slender neck and is finished in a beautifully varied reduction-fired glaze. The glaze displays rich earthy tones ranging from warm brown to blush and smoky shades, with natural crackle patterns developed during the firing process. The underside bears the potter’s signature together with the date 1996. A striking piece of late 20th century studio pottery that works equally well as a decorative object or a sculptural vase.
