ANDREW WALFORD SOUTH AFRICA Natal Studio Pottery 20cm Vase, Signed Stoneware VGC. It is a stoneware piece, hand thrown and squared very slightly on the body. It is beautifully decorated in a range of coloured glazes – blues around the neck, with browns and red browns on a light grey with four areas of his “Zulu-Zen” decoration in blues & greys. Signed on the base with his hand painted mark in grey and brown. This really is a beautiful vase, by one of South Africa’s best potters. Condition – Excellent condition – no cracks, chips or issues. Minor glaze crazing visible on the grey areas of glaze. Please see all photos to help assess condition fully. Size – approx 20.6 cm tall, 18.8 cm across at widest, 9.8 cm across at rim, (8 1/8″ tall, 7 3/8″ across at widest, 3 7/8 across at rim). Weight of vase – 1.9 kg. Andrew Walford, born 1942, is one of South Africa most acclaimed potters, who exhibits in South Africa and internationally. He is the leading exponent in South Africa of the Anglo-Oriental ceramic tradition. Andrew has travelled to England, Sweden, Germany, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea where he exhibited, taught, viewed and practised art. Andrew is a hands-on, intuitive artist who is singularly involved in every aspect of making the ceramic item; from digging his own clay to forming and firing. He visited legendary potters Bernard Leach in St. Ives, Cornwall, UK and Shoji Hamada in Japan, who profoundly influenced his artistic development. Andrew’s studio is in Shongweni, KZN and he often refers to his mark making as Zulu Zen. He uses the influence of Japanese brush strokes to enrich his pottery. I pack parcels very well using recycled materials where possible, both to keep costs down and be more sustainable. Please try to reuse or recycle packaging where you can.

A very striking and large decorative pot by the South Korean ceramicist Seung-Ho Yang dating from the late 1970s or early 1980s. It belonged to my late Mother-in-law who used to pot at the Midlands Art Centre from the 1970s to the 1990s and who may have bought it at an exhibition of Sueng-Ho Yang’s work held at MAC from the 3rd April -25th April 1982. He lived in Birmingham during this period and worked at MAC. I also include a photo of the same or similar pot advertising an exhibition of his work in France in 1984 that my parents-in-law may have visited whilst on holiday or from where it may have been bought, if not at the MAC exhibition in 1982. It is in excellent condition with no chips or damage. Please see the accompanying photos. Measuring approximately 33 cm high, the rim diameter is 20 cm and the circumference at its fullest point is 110 cm. Weight is approx 8 kg before packaging so collection in person would be preferable, but it will be packed with extreme care if despatched by courier. Wonderful Tenmoku glaze and baluster form finished with a typical Mommens rim. Made in the early to mid 1950s this earthenware vase was made before Ursula Mommens switched to stoneware.
