Bottle Vase, United Kingdom, 1950s-1970s Studio pottery, hand-made A rare, tall, hand-made vase reflecting the aesthetic of British studio pottery from the mid-20th century. Its impressive size and substantial weight underscore its sculptural presence. Made from dense clay with thick walls, the piece has a commanding, architectural feel. The surface is covered in a matte glaze of deep grey-blue tones, featuring distinctive rusty-brown speckles. These iron-rich spots result from the intentional inclusion of iron particles in the glaze prior to firing, creating an organic, painterly effect that varies in shape and intensity across the surface. The result is a rich visual texture that enhances the form’s natural irregularities. Unsigned, as is typical of many studio works from this period. The piece reflects the influence of Leach Pottery (St Ives), Winchcombe Pottery, and Aldermaston Pottery, among other key British studios of the time. Similar iron-spotting effects were explored by notable 20th-century potters such as Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, Lucie Rie, and Hans Coper, who were known for their experimentation with natural glazes, raw materials, and textural inclusions – often incorporating iron to produce surface variation and expressive depth. The vase embraces the wabi-sabi aesthetic – celebrating imperfection, organic form, and material honesty. An unusual Gustavsberg studio bowl. The bowl is marked to the base with the’Gustavsberg’ factory mark along with a hand made’G’ and hand symbol mark. The top is decorated with incised lines creating a grid pattern. Inside each grid is a large circular darker glaze spot. The rest of the bowl is decorated with a blue, purple glaze. The outside of the bowl and the foot are glazed with a darker blue glaze. 22.8 cm wide x 5.8 cm tall. The bowl has some surface scratches to the inside and some crazing to the glaze on the outside. It does display well and is a striking Scandinavian design. I have taken a number of pictures to try and give as accurate a description as possible. Any questions please just ask.
