Stewart Johnston (Dess Station Pottery), “Still Life” a large studio pottery tray with trompe l’oeil. And cork screw marked verso and dated 1976 with three large bottles (marked verso), a candle holder and a bell (station mark verso). This is a very rare and unique piece of art. Each piece is stamped with the Dess Station pottery’steam train’ and most are signed by Stewart. The bottles have removable pottery stoppers and the bell has a pottery clapper with a sweet sounding ring. All pieces are in great condition with the exception of one corner of the tray which has a piece chipped off. This cannot be seen from above or the front, as shown in the photographs. Tray is very heavy and measures. 57cm wide X 43cm deep. Bottles H27cm X 2 & H24cm. Bell H17cm candle holder H9cm. Any questions or if your require additional photographs, please message me.

This listing is for a very powerful medium sized vase by David Stewart (1930 – 2019). It has a very strong and simple relief pattern that might be referred to as truncated sweeping arcs. The background has a carved texture pattern. I have seen several vases with a similar motif but with a different background pattern so it is a style he enjoyed using but is not as frequent as his leaf and tree designs. The other pieces with this motif had his full signature. It does have a 5/8 inch chip to the edge of the rim which could and is worthy of being restored. It is 7 3/4 inches high by 5 1/2 inches in diameter. This vase has his early DS cypher, probably from the 1970’s or even the 1960’s. David Stewart was the design assistant to Marguerite Wildenhain at her school of ceramic design, Pond Farm, for about 20 years. His pots show her influence but I believe he surpassed her in the sophistication of his designs as well as the proportions of his forms. David Stewart is an American educator, painter/potter and former assistant to the late renowned artist Marguerite Wildenhain for nearly 20 years. Stewart was one of the original apprentices of Wildenhain, whom herself was the apprentice of renowned German artist Gerard Marcus at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Stewart studied industrial design at San Diego State University in San Diego, California, graduating in 1958. He became an assistant instructor at the noted Pond Farm artists colony in 1962, teaching alongside the Marguerite Wildenhain for many years. The colony inspired by Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesin, was home to Wildenhain and served as an elite artist community hosting artists from across the world from the mid 1940’s until 1985. By the early 1980s, Stewart became a full-time master potter owning and operating a boutique shop and gallery at Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town, San Diego. Stewart had his own pottery label with Lions Valley Stoneware for many years and was is a sought after consultant to the ceramics industry for design, clay body and glazes. Stewart has exhibited in the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada. His pottery and paintings are represented in several museums throughout the world.
